| RE: Free Crochet Sock Pattern |
If you google how to crochet socks you'll get lots of links, but I can't remember which ones were just for girls. There's also a site called Bev's Cottage that has links to crocheted sock patterns and one or two were for girls.
One of the things I'm looking for myself is crochet socks that can be worn in shoes and not just thick ones. There's a book on amazon for crocheting socks but I don't know if they have kids' sized socks in the book. ... View related article. |

| RE: Soy: The Magic Bean |
As a nutritionist, I remind readers that soymilk is not as nutritious as the labels claim. The USDA allows nutrtion labels on food packages to reflect the value of the RAW food, not the highly processed product in the package. Soymilk, ricemilk, and the like are not ever meant to be thought of as nutritive equals to dairy milk.
This doesn't mean everyone should or can have dairy milk. But do be aware that soymilk does not provide the same nutritive elements as dairy milk. If you can't have dairy milk, enjoy your soymilk, but be aware it's not much of a food. It's basically the water that beans have been cooked and mashed in. Not without some benefit, but cooking water is never the same as a real food. ... View related article. |

| RE: Using a Chimney Balloon (Chimney Pillow) |
When we moved into an apartment with a smallish, metal fireplace, I immediately sewed a circle of fabric over several layers of an old cutter quilt to make a plug. The damper is so wobbly, it doesn't really close. I sewed an length of cord onto it so I can pull it out easily if ever we want to use it. (Not likely as we live in southern Arizona.)

| RE: A Guide to Non-Toxic Cleaning |
I love your list but it would cost me at least $20 to buy all the products listed above and I'd still have to store the portions not used in cleaning mixes.
I buy one product for everything: soap. I use old t-shirts, diapers, or towel pieces for rags. Add hot water for greasy messes and room temperature water for everything else and VIOLA!, it's all clean! If you soak pans, you only need to scrub lightly with an onion bag "scrubber" with no additional product. If you wipe down the bathroom sink and bathtub walls once a week, there's no gritty, grimy stuff so you don't need the Bon Ami (which I do love, but don't need).
Our grandmothers didn't use even these more natural and basic items because they cleaned regularly and simply didn't need them.
I use soap for dishes, laundry, cleaning. Sometimes a liquid and sometimes a bar, depending on what's most convenient at the time. The liquid Ivory costs about $2 a bottle and lasts a couple of months if used for everything because I dilute it in half. The only additional products we buy are toothpaste and shampoo for personal hygeine. The simpler, the better for me.
But these are such excellent alternatives for those who need a few more touches than we do. Thanks for posting them. ... View related article. |

Crochet a rug with t-shirt "yarn". Cut one up by cutting into the bottom about an inch or two and then continuing round and round until you have a big "string". Then you roll those into balls of t-shirt yarn. As you crochet you sew the end of one to the beginning of the next and keep going. ... View related article. |

| RE: Money Saving Strategies |
Just this afternoon at the grocery store I almost bought a bakery package of 6 cinnamon rolls for $2.79. But then I noticed the refigerator cinnamon rolls (in the packages like Pillsbury biscuits) were on sale for $1.66 each. So for $3.32 I bought two packages which will make 16 cinnamon rolls.
And that's because I was being lazy! Usually I buy cake mix on sale for $1 a box or less and bake 24 cupcakes (no frosting) which are good with a cup of tea for a snack, or I bake 5-6 dozen cake mix cookies.
This saves us at least $4-$9 weekly for cheap-to-on-sale store-bought cookies. Well, maybe I am lazy! But even I can't figure out how to bake 5 dozen cookies for about $1.20 (including oil and eggs) totally from scratch. And when you count in the time saved using the mix, then it's definitely a deal.
By making my husband's lunch every day and baking instead of buying snacks from the store, I save more than $35 a week than if he bought lunch and we bought snacks. We don't put that money in the bank though. When we figure out how to change our lifestyle so we spend less, we choose to work less so we can have more time rather than more money.
Money saving can really be part of creating a richer life. ... View related article. |

Add nutritional yeast to their food (sprinkle it on) and also pill them with a small pill sized piece of garlic once a day. Then you won't need any other treatments.
Pennyroyal oil is great; you put a dab of the oil on the base of the tail and under the neck, but it's ery strong smelling and will make the pets' eyes water and yours too. If they lick it, they will froth because it's "hot" like fresh cinnamon oil. It is not to be used around pregnant women as it can cause miscarraige.
By the way, pennyroyal oil works to repel termites as well so if your neighbors have a problem, sprinkle it around your house. ... View related article. |
