RE: Uses for Bacon Grease
"Well, I agree with Doris; as my husband says "That grease clogs up my arteries just me thinking about it", ahahaha! He's so right and so is Doris

At 98 degrees (you know, your body temperature!) bacon grease remains a liquid. Trying to compare solid grease that has been sitting under the sink or the fridge to bacon grease being pumped and digested throughout a body that remains 98 degrees is pretty ridiculous. Eat healthy. Eat in moderation. Take jogs or go to the gym after work. ... View related article.

RE: Using Vinegar And Water Solution In Carpet Cleaner
I've used just about every kind of carpet cleaner solution in my steam cleaner. None of them compare to one simple cheap solution, which is vinegar mixed with water. I use a solution of about 1 to 10 and am amazed at the results every time. It gets rid of spots that come back to the surface and cleans my steam cleaner at the same time. The vinegar smell does stay around until the carpet is completely dry. I usually spray the carpet down with some no-vacuuming foam afterwards while the carpet is still wet and light some candles. I have three messy children and vinegar works great for me! http://decidegreen.net/ ... View related article.

RE: Adding Color to My Kitchen Walls
If the counters or cabinets aren't greenish in hue, then a very light yellow would be nice and won't grate on you over the years. If the kitchen doesn't get much sun, then light yellow walls make it "feel" sunnier, too.

I would stay away from really strong colors as they tend to get old after a while - unless you are the type who likes redecorating / repainting every few years! If the counters or cabinets ARE a bit greenish though then the yellow may make them look sickly. ... View related article.

RE: Freezing Homemade Cream of Potato Soup
@ Debbie-Jenn : Water bath canning is only safe for acidic foods with pH < 4.6 (eg. peaches, apples, tomatoes + citric acid). For non-acidic foods, water bath canning does not get hot enough to prevent the growth of botulism. Use a pressure cooker to can non-acidic foods, it's the ONLY safe way! ... View related article.

RE: Electric Smoke Detector Won't Stop Beeping
My smoke alarm chirped twice at 4 a.m., needless to say, it freaked me out (and woke me up.) I thought it was just a fluke, so I tried to go back to sleep. 10 minutes later it beeped at me 3 times.

That is when I called the apartment emergency line. They were of no help. My main concern was the sanity of my neighbors - I live in a packed apt. complex.

I started tinkering with my fire alarms. Well, the ones that I could reach. What do I know about replacing batteries in electric smoke detectors? Nothing! I did not want to risk un-plugging the electric part in fear that it would start going off constantly.

Additionally, out of the three in my apt., there is one so high up on my wall that I would need a ladder to get to it! Um, problem: Where the do I get a ladder at four in the morning?

During this fiasco, I killed a spider that happened to be crawling down the wall from that "high up" detector. I did not put two and two together until I read the last post here on this page. It was the spider! :D No more chirping.
Maybe I will get some sleep tonight? ... View related article.

RE: House Paint on My Car
I had white paint from my garage door on my new red car, and I got it off with rubbing alcohol and a few cotton pads. Didn't even remove any clearcoat, though I'm probably going to give it a wax anyway to make sure it stays clean. ... View related article.

RE: Hydrangea Isn't Flowering
There are three possibilities for lack of flowering among the hydrangea species. The first two: "too much shade and improper pruning" apply to all hydrangeas, while the other "weather-related damage to flower buds" applies primarily to the big leaf hydrangea.
