I have started to wonder the same thing. I fry boneless breaded chicken about 1-2 times per week (usually in Canola, but sometimes Vegetable Oil). It seems such a waste to just throw the oil away, considering the cost. I will "attempt" the coffee filter method. I might have tried this years ago. I am just hard pressed to believe that the thickness of the oil can actually go through the coffee filter, with it's tightly compressed fibers. If many of you have tried it successfully, I will try it. I am sure that if it works, it must take a long time to filter, right? ... View related article.
Thanks for the feedback! I will try those methods. I was hoping for a little less manual solutions, like a solvent to just dissolve the fibers and hair...of course, without damaging the brush! I guess the cut, hook and pull method will work fine. Something I can do during commercials! :) Thanks again. ... View related article.
I haven't "Crackle Painted", but I have painted Countertops. If you do this, just make sure that you lightly sand your countertops first, then apply 1-2 coats of Primer. Using a sponge roller is best to keep the texture even. Once done and dried, lightly sand the countertops again (maybe with a 120-150 grit sandpaper), to smooth out. After painting with the crackle paint...and it is dried, you will need to do another light sanding. The final step would be to put a sealer over the countertops. The options are: Polyurethane (which will require several coats)...or an Epoxy Glaze Coating (FAMOWOOD Glaze Coat) is sold at Lowes and other Home Improvement Stores. Joann Fabrics and other stores like it sell another version (can't think of the name).
For more information on painting countertops, do a search on ThriftyFun for "Painting Laminate Countertops". A lot of people have done it with awesome results! Good luck! ... View related article.
I always keep a can of "Goof Off" in my tool /supply cabinet. It comes in handy for removing adhesive residue and other types of residues. Applying with a paper towel will get the residue off pretty easily. Smaller cans of "Goof Off" only cost about $3-$4. ... View related article.
This is a great tip! Thanks! While I removed the covers to the outlet, paint on the outlet just seems to get on when the roller went crazy...
Needless to say, a tip I learned to avoid this in the future (in addition to removing the cover plate), is to put painters tape over the outlet face. So, if the roller or brush slips and gets paint on it, it will be on the tape and not on the outlet.
Another option would be to just install "peel-n-stick" laminate/linoleum tiles over the existing flooring. They are relatively inexpensive, easy to trim and the results are great. I was opposed to this idea a few years ago when my white linoleum kitchen floors needed replaced. But, I have been thrilled with the results and received many compliments. If you consider this, you can 1 sample tile for under $1.00 at the local home improvement store and see how it would look. Get extra if you do decide to do this, as it will be easy to pull up a worn tile and replace with a fresh one down the road. I've now done this with same thing in my bathrooms and landing areas and very happy with them. Just my thots. Good luck! ... View related article.
I am going to suggest a grayish/tan color on the walls. With the dark green tiles and white, it would give it an updated and modern look (depending on the style you prefer). Go to your local home improvement store and get pick up a bunch of paint chip samples. Lowes has the mini-cans of paint, that you can use to test and they only cost about $2.00.
As far as the cabinets/vanity go, what are the colors of the vanity? In my kitchen, I gave the cabinets a new look by using a foam brush with med. gray (oyster shell) paint. I used light strokes on the frames which made it look like weathered wood (very cool). Of course, I put primer on first and then after painting, I put a light coat of polyurethane.
As far as budget goes, I get it, believe me. 1 gallon of paint can provide approx. 400 sq ft of coverage (for the walls). I don't see a need to buy the best brand with a 25-year warranty. I personally bought "Olympic" for $13.00 a gallon and about $5.00 for a quart. I bought a quart of paint for my cabinet frames and still have plenty left over. Good luck! ... View related article.
