RE: Gnats in Potting Soil
Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies Israelensis (BTI) that kills the larvae of fungus gnats, mosquitoes and black flies . When BTI is eaten by these larvae toxins are released into their gut which causes the larvae to stop eating. Without food the larvae die. This interrupts the life cycle of these pests and the population then dies off. ... View related article.

RE: Getting Rid of Subterranean (Ground) Termites
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is the finely ground fossils of prehistoric fresh water diatoms. Kills household and garden pests like cockroaches, ants, slugs, fleas, beetles and many other crawling insects. Works great indoors or out. Insects die within 48 hours of contact. It is very inexpensive and can be used inside or outside to control insects. Will not harm humans or pets. Diatomaceous Earth controls insects by using physical, not chemical, action: It punctures an insects exoskeleton and absorbs its body fluids, thus posing no harm to warm-blooded life. Moreover, on any surface, this natural pesticide has a remarkable repellency factor. As long as Diatomaceous Earth is present, insects tend to stay away, making a serious infestation unlikely. The more it is used, the more an environment is created which makes insects feel unwelcome.

Be sure to buy the Food Grade DE. ... View related article.

RE: What kind of tree is this?
I would take a cutting and go to a nursery that sells a lot of evergreens or agricultural extension center and have them identify it for you. If your library has the huge horticulture encyclopedia Hortis you could look in there as well. ... View related article.

RE: Frugal Planter Ideas
I make planters from old children's blue jean overalls. I hang them up on my patio. They are really cute and easy to make.

RE: Homemade Garden Trellis
This is a wonderful idea and one I have done as well. I planted sweet peas in mine and had a wall of sweet peas that smelled wonderful and looked fantastic.

Did the string hold up the gourds? That would be my only concern! ... View related article.

RE: Tin Punch Lantern
I love this idea...but I want to modify it by using small cans which I will attach a string of Christmas tree lights to and hang up along the perimeter of my patio. Each bulb will have a can attached to it!

These can lights would alos be great as luminaries at Christmas along a walkway or driveway!

Thanks for the great ideas!
