RE: How can I get rid of the magpies but keep the rest of the birds?
We have this problem as well and the folk at our City (Calgary) helpline recommended the following (humane) options.

Keep a loaded water gun handy on the deck and shoot the birds whenever you see them. (Pellets or scatter shot from other types of guns could harm neighbours.)

Plant marigolds. Magpies are averse to strong odours. Scatter moth balls around your yard.

Ask your butcher for scraps and lace the meat with hot peppers or pepper spray. You may wish to do this only when you can keep an eye on the bait to ensure no other animals or small children come in contact with it.

Good luck!

RE: How To Care For Shasta Daisies
Up here in Canada they are most definitely a weed. Many of my family are farmers and and hate shasta daisies which are not only insidious but remarkably hardy. They're difficult to get rid of! The point of my comments? If farmers up here try everything to kill the things (herbicides, plowing them under) and the damnable things continue to thrive? They just can't be at all difficult to raise.

RE: Putting Pictures on a Backpack
Hi, Lisa.

A good friend of mine just made a quilt using old photographs. She was able to scan them into her computer and then print them ... on fabric! To the best of my knowledge she doesn't have a special printer, but used a special type of fabric.

Alternatively, if you want to use paper, why not cover the photos with heavy plastic (fabric shops carry it) before sewing: more durable and rain resistant.

RE: Advertising a New Website
Hey, Kellye.

Are you familiar with something called "contra?" It's an exchange or barter of services. If you can find a professional whos business is publicizing web sites, someone interested in your goods or services, you can do an exchange (no cash involved). Also consider contra for your ad on other sites? Your city may have a barter organization which you can join or at least access for additional information.

Include your URL on all your e-mail, snail mail, cheques, business cards and consider writing an informative article for a local magazine (they'll take the article if you don't charge them and if the piece offers good information for their readers).

Best of luck!

RE: Removing Decals From A Motorhome
Hey, Dawn.

Nailpolish remover also works quite well, particularly if you can figure out how to soak the area and keep it soaked for half an hour or so.

Good luck!

RE: Minimizing Diseases in Vegetable Gardens
You'll have to do a little research, but the information is readily available online, at your library and through a magazine/publishing company called The Good Earth.

The trick is Companion Planting. For instance, plant a row of marigolds beside your spuds and you won't get grubs, plant onions beside cabbage to deter slugs (I don't know if this is exactly correct, but you get the idea).

My Mom has been doing this for years and her large, beautiful vegetable garden is not only pest free but prolific as well.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Rose Anne

RE: Streak Free Mirrors
Vinegar also works well, if you don't mind the smell.

RE: Crochet Sleeveless Top
You might also try the websites of companies which manufacture and sell wool and crochet supplies. Many of them provide free patterns. Or go to www.google.com and enter "free crochet patterns" for quite a number of sites to visit.

RE: Cleaning Leather Clothing
I've had great success tossing leather garments in the washing machine; gentle cycle, cold water, minimal mild detergent. Hang to dry.

Good luck!
