RE: Put the Keys with the Leftovers
I've also done this when I've called up to visit my parents right after shopping, and wanted to put some chilled purchases in their fridge while I talk to them.

I was a bit worried about actually putting the keys in the fridge, in case they wouldn't work if they got too cold, but you can put them anywhere, e.g. on a shelf in the kitchen, as the fact of having to retrieve them will remind you of the food in the fridge. ... View related article.

RE: Uses for Potato Masher
Mashed up mixed carrot and swede is lovely. You can cook them in the same pan too - cut up the swede into small cubes and slice the carrots. Add butter and black pepper, mash well - yumm. ... View related article.

RE: Need Christmas Gift and Other Ideas
How about making tiny travel sewing kits, that people can keep in their wallet.

Get some thin white card and cut into credit-card sized oblongs, rounding off the corners. Cut a few nicks in both of the long sides and wind around a couple of feet of different coloured threads - I suggest black, white, cream, brown and grey. Sew a shirt button on the card and stick a needle and two pins securely through the board. Add a safety pin. Slip the whole thing into a tiny polythene bag, or the corner of one, cut to size. Better still, get some transparent A5 document display wallets and use the bottom corners to make two holders for the sewing kit.

If you can get a cheap job-lot of some tiny embroidery scissors, or folding scissors, these would make a great addition, held in place by weaving between the threads. It might even be worth contacting manufacturers, to see if they can give you a decent price for a bulk order. ... View related article.

RE: Gift For The "Impossible To Shop For" Person
I am a great believer in giving consumable gifts, as you can't possibly know other people's taste in most things, so making up a hamper is a great suggestion.

Look for long-dated items (tins of cooked meat and fish seem to last about five years!) and perhaps pop one special personal gift in the middle, like a book token or half bottle of favourite wine. ... View related article.

RE: Toilet Brush Tip
Good idea! Would just like to add that instead of squishing loads of cleaner all around the pan, it is just as effective to squirt it directly onto the brush - and you won't use half as much. ... View related article.

RE: Uses for Old Towels
I keep all ours and put them on the living room sofa and chairs, as the cats like to sleep on the furniture. I know it defeats the object of having nice things to cover them up, but at least it keeps the muddy paws and shed fur off them. Can be slung in the wash every couple of days too (towels not cats - oops!). ... View related article.

RE: Uses for Cut off Blue Jean Legs
Sew the narrowest edges together with strong thread, and firmly stitch a loop of cord to each side of the other end, to make a bottle carrier for picnics, parties or just for giving a bottle as a gift.

I saved my off-cuts and they have been invaluable for patching the knees of hubby's work jeans over the years. ... View related article.

RE: Ingredient Substitutions
Ah, but have you got any reverse suggestions? I am more likely not to have the substitutes than the original ingredients.

For instance, I could use some evap milk right now for a recipe, but only have ordinary. ... View related article.

RE: Staying Caught Up On Ironing
I save time by [a] leaving the ironing board up and ready to go all the time, in a spare bedroom, and [b] ironing shirts straight from the washer - so much easier instead of steaming creases out when the clothes are bone dry. I never iron bed linen - take them straight out of the tumble dryer and either fold or put back on the beds. I will iron pillow cases for the guest room but that's all!

I also try to coordinate my ironing sessions with something interesting on the radio (preferably) or TV, or if all else fails put on some favourite, upbeat music. ... View related article.

RE: Stained Shirt
What did you make the logos from? Can't suggest how to remove the residue unless we know what it is.

If all else fails, could you buy some sew-on badges or motifs (sports teams etc. - try a haberdashery store or sports supplier) and cover the messy area with the new patches? Make sure you stitch them around the edges, rather than trying anything time-saving with an iron!

Depending on what the original motifs were made of, be careful when washing not to risk any gunge spreading further afield. A cool wash is less risky.
