Profile For lostinthe -

I am a 42 year old female.  I am married to the man I have been with since I was 17 yrs old.  I am always looking for advice and answers to common and not so common questions.  I have a few health problems that like to flare up and interfere with life so at times I am not as able to things that I would like to do.  I am eager to meet like minded people.

RE: Venting a Woodburning Stove
One thing you had better due is call your insurance agent and install your stove occording to their specs. If you do not do this and your house has any damage or burns down your insurance doesn't have to pay a cent to you. Look for a certified installation company usually found under chimney sweeep in the phone book. ... View related article.

RE: Couch Seems Too Big for Room
You are probably going to kill me for the this but perhaps you need to purchase a sofa table to go behind each part of the sectional and then end tables to go at each end. These pieces of furniture will tie everything together and take away the "dropped in from no where look" that the sectional alone will cause. ... View related article.

RE: Deterrent for Snakes
I have tried every method to deter rattlesnakes. I have found two things that seem to help. Mind you nothing is 100 percent. Just use common sense when out in your yard and on your property. Rattlesnakes do not want to run into you or bite you any more then you want them to. Every single one I have had "face to face" contact with has tried to avoid me. That said here are the two things I have found work best.

Keep your yard clean of debris. Stacks of wood, tires, trash, etc harbor a nice place for a snake to hide and are a place for them to find easy food such as mice, voles, rats, baby bunnies etc. Keep your yard mowed and everything trimmed with a weed eater. Take away the food and shelter source and you take away the odds of having the snakes.

Second is keep a dog. Something in the hunting or herding breed. The snake wants nothing to do with something that may eat them and will try to avoid it. Listen to your dogs bark during snake weather. ( Snake weather in the spring and the fall are warm sunny afternoons following cool mornings, in the summer snakes will often move and feed at night after things have cooled down. This is because a snakes body temp is affected by the temp around them. They warm up in the spring and fall and become active. In the middle of a hot summer they wait until the area temps are comfortable for them to become active.) Dogs do not like snakes and will sound the alarm to let you know that something menacing is around. You will be able to hear the alarm in your dogs bark and can immediately respond and dispose of the snake if needed. We will not harm a snake that is not in the posistion to harm us. If we see them away from our yard we let them be. If they are sunning on our porch we try to find someone to relocate them and in the worse case scenerio we have killed them before.

One more thing to remember is that a snake will not always rattle before they strike and their rattle noise varies according to the age and size of the snake. I have heard rattles sound like a honey bee. Do not trust that they will all sound the same.

I hate snakes, I really do but I have learned to co-exsist with them because I love our home and property. I have learned over the years that with a little work we can both live in the same place. Although that doesn't stop the shivers that run up my spine everytime I see one. Good luck to you. ... View related article.

RE: Motorcycle Club Christmas Float Ideas: Theme "Storybook Christmas"
I would make "storybooks" out of two pieces of plyboard hinged together so you can have one book on one side and another title on the other. Paint the story book pictures on the outside cutting out holes for the characters in the book to be played by people dressed as the characters riding on the float. If using a flat bed trailer you should be able to get 4 books on the trailer.

This is almost like a 3 dimensional book where the characters come alive. (think about the wooden cut outs you stick your head in and get your picture taken.) Base the books on popular xmas stories such as A Charlie Brown Christmas. The people on the float can then throw candy, coloring books or story books to the kids in the crowd. Parades are for kids so if you don't know any xmas books just ask the children what their favorite is. You can still dress the cyclists as reindeer. Hope this helps. Please post pictures of your float. ... View related article.

RE: Removing Odor From Dresser Drawers
I would try to polycoat the inside of the drawers if they are natural, if they are painted I would repaint them. This should "seal the odor in" as opposed trying to remove it. ... View related article.

RE: Difficulties Growing a Sugar Maple
You need to call the nearest University or College and ask how to get ahold of someone in the horticulture dept. They will be able to tell you how to get your answers if they can't help you. The professor may even use your tree as a learning tool for his students. ... View related article.

RE: Drainage for a Sloping Vegetable Garden
You don't say how long your trench is so I don't know if you can use my advice. If it is to long you may want to only use half of it in this manner.

I would use the trench for your compost pile. I would line the trench with cinder blocks. Lay one layer on the bottom of the trench with smooth sides up ( so that the compost doesn't fall into the holes on the cinder blocks. You can then google compost piles and pick out the "recipe" that suits you best.

By doing this your compost is always right by your garden making it easy to use and making it easy to dispose of garden waste. Good Luck ... View related article.

RE: Helping Care for Grandchildren
I agree with everyone. As long as the children are fine with a good sitter they will be just fine. Children do not understand the complexities of family relationships and love those who love them whether it is the baby sitter or Grandma. Talk to your child and see if they are comfortable with the sitters they have chosen and then ask them what you can do (when you are able to be there) to make things easier for them. Perhaps a day of housecleaning, laundry, maybe even just a dinner out. That way you will be helping everyone.

One last thing, by keeping your marriage happy and having a loving relationship with your husband you are setting a wonderful example for both your child and your grandchildren. ... View related article.
