My suggestions are coffee grounds and citrus peelings. Coffee grounds the better of the two. I've also used plastic forks (big pkg for $1 or so), but skewers would look much better! I saw an idea and it might have been on Thrifty Fun. Fill the inside with silk flowers or greenery (think a foam block was used) and the tiny white lights. Sort of on the idea of the potpourri jars w/lights, etc. except you'd want the contents upright (thus the foam block). Depending on what kind of tin; whether you would have to change the outside. I prefer to tie in yarn at the edge. I always tied a knot, but have found a new way that I like better. Use both the old and the new piece to work the first stitch and then on the next row, and what would now be the last stitch, work both loops/stitches as one stitch.
