| RE: Avoiding Charity Fraud |
I rarely donate to a charity that directly solicits me, and then only to well-known charities like the March of Dimes. The vast majority of my donations go to charities that I have heard about or sought out and then took my time researching. Web sites like Charity Navigator are great for checking out charities, but you can't exactly consult one while you're on the phone or at your door with someone who wants money right then.
I don't believe in charities making cold calls, going door-to-door, or standing at red lights, ever, and I will never donate to a charity that I see doing this. There are plenty of worthy organizations that don't hound people when they're busy or trying to enjoy a quiet evening at home. I even ignore those handsome firefighters at the red lights.
And, while I think the Salvation Army is an otherwise extremely worthy charity, I never give to their bell ringers, who, in my area at least, don't look like volunteers but instead appear to be homeless people who have been hired for the season. These are the same grimy, vaguely threatening people who otherwise would be standing on a streetcorner with a paper cup, and I ignore them at Christmas the same as I do the rest of the year.
So be a meanie like me, and don't give them money unless they give you time . . . time to think it over and do your homework. ... View related article. |

| RE: Cleaning Laminate Wood Floors |
Try this homemade recipe. It works great on my laminate floors.
1/3 cup water 1/3 cup rubbing alcohol 1/3 cup white vinegar 3 drops liquid dish washing soap 5-10 drops lemon essential oils (optional) Combine all ingredients in a clean spray bottle. Spray sparingly on laminate floors and mop up. The rubbing alcohol helps speed up the drying process. ... View related article. |

| RE: Watch PayPal For Fraudulent Charges |
|
Thanks for the tip. I think it's important to note that it's not Paypal making the charges to people's accounts, but rather a scammer who obtains Paypal user information through some fraudulent means like phishing. Paypal does need to be more on top of these situations, implement more and better safeguards, and provide better customer service for dealing with them, but Paypal itself is not making the fraudulent charges to people's accounts. ... | RE: Chemically Straightened Hair is Damaged |

Coconut oil is a wonderful deep conditioning treatment for dry hair. Slather it on, then comb it through, and wear a plastic conditioning cap for an hour or so. Then shampoo and condition as usual. The shampoo won't lather a lot because of the oil on the hair, but that's OK. It's still doing its job, and if you condition afterward, there's no need for a second lathering. ... | RE: My Debit Card Was Stolen and Used Online |
|
Shopping online isn't the problem. Shopping online with a debit card is what you must never do. Use a credit card, preferably one that offers disposable account numbers (Citibank and Discover do this). With a credit card, the money isn't being stolen directly out of your bank account; it's being stolen from the credit card issuing bank. Not only is the law more in your favor with a credit card; it's amazing how much more interested the bank will be in helping you with fraudulent charges when it's their money that's been stolen rather than yours. And with disposable numbers, the odds of anything bad happening at all go way down. ... View related article. |

Sterghe, where were you when I had a hungry teenaged boy? | RE: Memory Tip: Type It Out |

When studying, I do something very similar. But rather than typing the info verbatim, I summarize and paraphrase it. (Basically, I act as if I were an editor assigned the task of condensing the book.) I think this is even more effective than typing it verbatim, because you're putting the material in your own words. ... View related article. |
