| RE: Getting a Kitten to Sleep at Night |
This tip is often used for puppies & might work for kittens too. Kittens seem to have more of a mind of their own! If the animal is still very young perhaps a hot water bottle (filled with hot water of course) covered with a light weight blanket (a baby receiving blanket is nice or piece of old flannel bedding or clothing). This heat reminds them of mom or their litter-mates & comforts them as they are used to sleeping huddled together. If you don't have a pet bed you can place the covered water bottle into a shallow cardboard box that has a blanket in it for the pet to lay on, or even just a blanket or comforter crumpled in a heap on the floor. The pet will find that very cozy.
Sometimes you can put a ticking clock under the covers in the pet bed, this reminds them of mom's & siblings' heart beat. Kittens / cats are nocturnal animals & tend to roam at night. While they do sleep a lot during the 24 hour days, kittens at least for that first crazy year, are more active than grown cats. Your cat might not enjoy the placement of its pet bed & might prefer a perch that is up high where it can feel secure & watch over its surroundings.
Also be sure to have plenty of safe toys (not all need to be store bought & most kittens favor household items like hair scrunchies, alum. foil balls, etc). Please be sure toys are safe so that your cat cannot ingest or swallow the item. Toys such as ribbon, string, rubber bands are a no-no unless you are right there playing with the kitten. Enjoy your crazy unpredictable little ball of fluff! ... View related article. |

| RE: Using Coffee Grounds More Than Once |
|
In a drip coffeemaker: We re-use the grounds on the same day/morning. Add about half the usual amount of fresh grounds to the used grounds to get a second full pot of coffee. Fill water to the normal amount & brew. It is satisfactory for us. Rumor has it some churches & other social gathering places do this also. ... View related article. |

| RE: Teaching a Dog Not to Chase Cats |
|
Our dogs have responded fairly well to the "Leave It" command when they begin to bother the cats. That only works when we are present to give the command. After a while they might cease in their attempts to bother cats. Our cats mainly live in the large finished basement w/ their own private picture window, so don't feel sorry for them, they are quite content. Sometimes the dogs are just curious & sniff the cats or want to play w/ them. It might help to give the dog plenty of attention in the presence of the cat, or pay attention to them simultaneously if you can. There is some valuable info on the internet related to this topic. ... View related article. |

| RE: Pop Stain on Carpet |
|
You might be able to get red pop stains out of the carpet by using club soda (fizzy clear stuff sold in the soda pop or beverage aisle). You dampen the spot & blot it out onto a clean preferrably white rag (to avoid transferring color from the towel into your carpet). Work from the outside of the stain toward the inside to avoid spreading the stain. Try to avoid rubbing the stain, just blot. Keep repeating until the stain is blotted out. ... We make this recipe but call it "Three Bean Salad". A good variation is to add an additional or different variety of beans or chick-peas (garbanzo). We also do not drain the liquid. It keeps till it's gone & gets better each day. Great picnic side dish that is easy to make & take. ... View related article. |

Are you sure it is the actual red cannister that contains the lead & not the silver colored roosters on top? (Just a thought as they look like some type of metal or metallic plastic, which often does contain lead). Even if the set was recently purchased, there could be lead-violation items remaining for sale on store shelves. Buyer Be Aware. ... View related article. |

| RE: Christmas Craft Ideas for Kindergartners |
Very Cute, a real "keeper". Reindeer banners made from the child's foot print & hand prints !!
Materials: White fabric for a small banner, about the size of a garden flag, a cotton sheet, heavy cotton, muslin(?), maybe felt(?). Ask at a fabric store which is best as you will be making the side finished edges w/ pinking shears & don't want it to unravel or fray. Search for sticks from trees to use as the bar at the top. Acrylic paints in brown & red / green; red pom-poms; googley eyes; thin fabric ribbon to form a hanging hook.
Cut the fabric w/ pinking sheers to give it a nice finished edge on the sides & top, about the size of a garden flag. Fold the top over the stick & glue w/ fabric glue to secure it, might have to clothes pin or hold a bit till somewhat dry. (the stick keeps it hanging nice & adds a nice look). This preparation should be done ahead of time.
In class the children dip their foot into a very shallow tray of brown paint, or the teacher can paint the child's foot w/ a brush to avoid too much paint. The child steps on the fabric to make a footprint with the toes at the TOP, heel at the bottom. I don't think it matters which foot is used. (might want to have some extra pieces of fabric for oopsies!).
At the top of the footprint, I think in red or green paint the children put their two handprints. These are the reindeer's antlers.
Allow paint to dry & glue on a red pom-pom nose & appropriate size googly eyes. I'm not sure about drawing on a mouth (?).
With permanent Sharpie marker write the student's name & date on a bottom corner, or write it on a fat piece of masking tape & adhere to the back near one fo the corners (if you are worried about writing w/ permanent marker on the fabric, oops!).
These are so cute & were such a surprise to receive from our children. It was most special because they used their little hands & feet to make a personalized decoration / gift for the holidays. For taking home & giving to mom & dad and for storing them... they can be rolled & placed into a cardboard paper towel tube, even if the're wider than the tube & stick out the top & bottom, it will protect them. ...
