RE: Buying Organic Food
Well in answer to the 2nd post 1st, organically grown foods have been found to contain pesticides - but far less than 'conventionally' grown .

The sad fact is our environment has been poisoned - there's no escape from it, but buying & consuming organic products does help reduce your own personal exposure & also supports agricultural practices that are less harmful to our environment/ecology.

As for the 1st question, most organic costs approx. the same as 'conventional' here where I live. But there are more than a few co.s that charge 'what the market will bear' - that is, many people don't question higher $$ for organics coz they perceive it as higher quality (which it usually is).

& what many do not realise is that the super cheap prices for 'conventional' foods are the result of subsidies - so tax $$ pays the costs - a.k.a. 'hidden' costs.Environmental damage, loss of habitat/ecosystems, farmworker healthcare - not to mention cheap imports which put US producers @ a disadvantage - all get paid for out of taxpayer pockets - sooner or later. So you either pay a bit more up front or subsidise (for a lot more) the 'hidden' costs of 'cheap' food .

FWIW, I belong to a small co-op - about a dozen members buy from a local organic distributor & have membership w/ a local CSA(community supported agriculture) organic farm.(You might check to see if there is a CSA in your area - they're almost everywhere.)We order every other week & split the costs - 2 weeks worth of organic produce & organic eggs costs me less than $30 & feeds my household of 3 adults.

I have a garden too & fruit trees - all organic.

RE: Adding Tea Tree Oil to Hand Soap
Yes you can add it just like you'd add any other essential oil - I think the standard am't is around 1 tsp. or so per pint???

I use straight tea tree EO on bites, cuts, blemishes, w/ no ill effects & have very sensitive skin.Just keep it away from eyes!

& keep it away from cats as well - it will make them very sick. ... View related article.

RE: Sewing Machine Keeps Breaking Needles
Oh and..

is it a zigzag machine? Did you doublecheck to see that needle position is set properly for the stitch you are doing? ... View related article.

RE: Sewing Machine Keeps Breaking Needles
You may simply have the wrong type of needles in your machine.Did you check the manual?

Other possible reasons may be:

As stated above - bent needle or needle inserted improperly (or crappy needles)

Plate is loose or crooked

Too much upper thread tension - or thread is caught elsewhere & not coming off spool properly - check threading

Too much bobbin tension - or bobbin is in backwards or upside-down

Thread is too thick

Fabric is too thick for needle

If you haven't trouble-shot all this stuff yet, check it out.

RE: Asking My Mom To Let Me Shave
Oh yeesh! I remember trying to sneak behind my mom's back & shave my legs when I was 12.I cut myself VERY badly & had a huge bandage I tried to hide under my bathrobe/nightgown - what was I thinking? Of COURSE she found out & I got a lecture, but I think it made her realise this was inevitable & after I healed up, she came around & helped me out.

I do think the depilatory idea is a good 1 - much safer than razors for a beginner.

Definitely don't be afraid to talk to your mom - if you can't talk to her about this, what can you talk to her about? She's your mom! I'm sure she cares about your feelings.

Perhaps you might approach it by asking her for help, rather than begging for permission? That is, "Mom, I need your help w/ a problem....."

RE: Homemade Gift For a 15 Year Old Boy
I'd prob'ly just give in to the $$ thing - a gift certificate to a local music store might be appreciated.....

RE: Dried Clay in Vase
Or you might try dunking the vase in hot water for a few minutes....

RE: Lipstick Causing Chapped Lips
Make sure you're getting enough water, for sure(@ least 1 1/2 quarts daily) - & also Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs).

I use Burt's Bees Lip Shimmers & have no prob..

Here's a great site for natural healing/beauty...

& an article specifically about EFAs;

& I've learned to avoid products containing petroleum derivatives (like Vaseline/petroleum, mineral oil) - it actually dries out your skin(i.e. a 'rebound' effect) & makes it more sensitive to sun damage.

RE: Paint Technique To Lighten a Dark Room
You can make a 'wash' from white or off-white latex paint, thinned w/ water to a milky consistency.Wear gloves & use a rag or big sponge to wipe the wash over the painted walls in a circular motion - just like you were washing the walls.Start @ the top & work your way down to avoid drips. You just kind of rub it in - sort of like doing a wood stain.

This won't give a perfectly smooth result - it resembles smoke or mist.

RE: Bees in My Trumpet Vines
Why would you want to get rid of bees? They are a beneficial insect & will not harm you - if you leave them alone - they're usually more interested in flowers than people.....

I have tons in my yard & they completely ignore me in favour of pollen & nectar. The only exceptions are the solitary, big black carpenter bees - which are very curious & hover around to check me out sometimes, before buzzing away. ... View related article.
