I have been retired from teaching for one year and am headed back in the fall! I am working hard to reclaim a neglected garden, get rid of clutter, and start a new life with my new partner. My partner is Mollie - an adorable little spaniel. I am looking for all the cheap (oops! thrifty) ways to do things. I do remember things from the early years but there are a lot of new ideas out there and I am eager to learn them. If I can share any of the old ways, I will jump right in.

Have you checked what a Leyland Cypress looks like? It looks very much as you describe except that it should not have yellow tips. Although there might be a cultivar of it that does. It is very common in this area. ... View related article.
Order some books by Mel Bay. They are excellent! They are vey easy to understand and follow along on your own - especially for a beginner. And they are not very expensive! Also look for Ritchie! She features the older, more traditional songs but her books are a little more complicated. If you want specific names. Let me know. ... View related article.

Repeat Row 2 throughout. Finished blanket should measure about 4' long or desired length. Change colors after every 4 rows or so. This is a very flexible pattern. I have seen ripples with color changes mid-row.... just depends on the look you want.
I know that acetone will get rid of Krazy Glue. Basically that's fingernail polish remover. But it can harm synthetic fabrics so I would test it somewhere it doesn't show first. ... View related article.
I purchased a HP desktop computer last October. In December I had to run a complete Recovery disk on it, thereby losing all my programs and settings. Three months later the computer began losing its settings and finally failed to boot up. I called Tech support and was told by someone in India to take it to a computer shop to get my data off it and then call back. I did. New guy in India. He didn't know anything about it. The first guy forgot to assign a case number. He kept asking what the screen said. I explained that it was in the shop. He kept telling me this was impossible. Went and got the computer back. Called India again. New guy again. He didn't know anything. Nothing had been recorded. He finally gave me a case number. I read what the screen said about boot failure and that the computer shop told me I had a harddrive failure. He said that was impossible! He had me hit a number of keys and annnounced I had a harddrive failure. They would ship me a new harddrive and for $30 a tech would come out and install it. I told him I would install it myself. Two weeks later my HP is up and running again. And 3 months later - another harddrive failure! More back and forth with someone reading from a manual in India. Finally emailed HP and demanded new computer. They refused. They sent a tech out to the house to run a complete check on all parts of the computer and install a new harddrive. The tech came and installed the new harddrive. He did not check anything. I have not tocuhed the computer this last month. I am using my old laptop. I have a useless, still under warranty, HP sitting on the floor. I can't find the address or any way to reach someone in HP to help. The CEO has made it clear she is unconcerned. I have found out since that I have lots of company when it comes to HP! ... View related article.
Me again. I found this post several months ago on ThriftyFun! When we think of lavender, we think of the pretty, light purple flowers that blow gently in the breeze, producing a lovely, heady scent. The lavender's scent has been used for many years in bouquets, sachets, and potpourri. Did you know that lavender has many other uses? Lavender plants repel insects. Place them around the house, or grow them near the patio. Boil the flowers in some water, and keep the liquid mixture handy to relieve insect bites. The flowers of the lavender plant can be used either fresh or dried in the rinse water for your hair or clothes.
Lavender also can be used in bath products. Here's an easy recipe for a fragrant lavender soap:
Lavender Soap
(Not only is this soap cleansing, it's pretty! Consider giving it as a gift in clear jars, decorated with ribbon.)
Ingredients:
8 tablespoons boiling water 10 tablespoons finely grated castile soap 2 tablespoons dried and crushed lavender flower petals 4 drops of lavender oil Crush the flower petals until they are powdery. Melt the soap in the bowling water in a double boiler. Stir it frequently until it is smooth and melted. Remove from heat, and stir in the crushed flower petals. Pour into a bottle and keep covered. ... View related article.
I have an herb book that gives several uses of lavender but none pertain exactly to beauty. It gives a receipe for biscuits, mentions making a jelly out of it, numerous medicinal uses (mostly the oil) and says it is great as a moth repellent! Yipee! Lavender is my favorite fragrance and I can stop my search for mothballs! If you would like me to post what my book says, I would be happy to. I just didn't want to send you a bunch of info you couldn't use. ... View related article.
If you find a solution to this, I would love to know! I bought a HP 8 months. I am typing this on my Dell laptop because my HP is having its 3rd new harddrive put in. HP's response? Three complete harddrive failures in 8 months in not unusual! I have had various computers for 20 years and NEVER had a harddrive failure. HP refuses to do anything other than stick in another one and they want to charge me for the labor even though the machine is still under warrantry. My tech support? Someone in India reading from a manual and asking me to repeat my question a dozen times because he doesn't understand! And then they wonder why we don't buy American. HP is my first and last American desktop! Their service is even worse than then workmenship. ... View related article.
