RE: Winter Warmth Tips
I have 2 very small Chihuahuas and they have heating pads under the blankets on their beds. It has worked well for 8 years. The rooms I do not use are closed and vents turned off. The upstairs is an open, so I put curtains on the top of the stairs too keep the cold from coming down stairs and heat from raising up into it.

Closets are kept close. Alot of cool air comes out of my closets and there is no need to heat it. The entry to the house is curtained off too so the cold air does not come in the rest of the house when the door is opened.

At night I always watch TV in bed and use a yardage of fleece over the top of the top portion of me. I can stick my arms out from the covers that go over me and still use my remote while keeping my upper body warm. Sometimes I put my fleece housecoat on backwards while sitting up in bed to keep toasty. It is like a snuggle.
Fleece is a wonderful thing, as it really is a lot warmer than yarn afghans.
Wearing socks to bed warms you up as does a stocking hat. Remember seeing those old nightcaps women wore? Same principle.

A nice warm drink before bed is a good thing, as it warm you from the inside out. I live in South Dakota and we have some cold winters, but I only have a woven cotton blanket and a thin feather quilt on my bed all winter.
For those of you with pets.Three Dog Night. I hate winter! ... View related article.

RE: Training a Dog to Stop Barking
I have 2 Chihuahuas and a terrier. I say "no barks" and spray them with a squirt bottle. This has seemed to work. Treats do not. They are picky and treats are not an option. ... View related article.

RE: Create Display Shelves Above Windows
Years ago I made cornice boards which were about 6 inches from the ceiling. At Christmas I would put garlands, fake apples and lights on top of them. They looked wonderful and added a great festive touch to the livingroom. Shelves are a great idea for a country look! Nice idea. ... View related article.

RE: Use Baking Soda for Coffee and Tea Cups
I started keeping baking soda in a jar from minced onion. It has the shaker holes or the larger hole to shake more out. Recycle the spice or herb jars for cornstarch for gravies etc. They work great! ... View related article.

RE: Homemade Potty Pad for House Training
I have been doing this for years and it works great for my Chihuahuas. At first they did not like the newspaper, so I put a layer of cheap paper towels on top of the newspapers. (I think it was the feel of the newspaper on their pads.) Little by little I used fewer paper towels, now it is just the newspapers on top of the tablecloth or old shower curtain.
Every week I wash the shower curtain with the towels or cleaning rags. A plastic shower curtain cut in two works well, so you always have a dry extra one.
Also you can get heavy duty plastic from furniture stores. Most have the plastic from the mattresses and box springs after they deliver them. ... View related article.

RE: Satisfy Sweet Cravings With Dried Fruit
As strange as it sounds to some people, this works. A handful of raisens or craisens works very well for me. Personally, I am not crazy about other dried fruits. It probably is the natural sugar in the fruits. ... View related article.

RE: Information About a Deaf Pitbull
We had a deaf rat terrier who had been in several homes before it was discovered she was deaf. Of course the people thought she was dumb and somewhat abusive. It takes alot of patience, but they can learn all kinds of hand signals and most respond well to lots of love and positive reinforcement.
To ask Molly if she wanted to go out we would get her attention and "walk" two fingers in the air, like in the old phone book commercial of "let your fingers do the walking". We would shake our finger back and forth to say NO NO! Luckily she was a very smart little gal and learned quickly. She was a real jewel. When I came home from work she would bare her teeth to "smile" at me. The dog had a wonderful sense of humor! ... View related article.
