RE: Using Yeast in a Bread Machine
Do not try to use the rapid rise unless your machine has a setting for this type of yeast. If you use it on a regular bread setting the bread will rise too high and then start to fall in the center before it starts to bake. Keep the yeast away from the liquids in the pan and make sure to bring all your ingredients to room temperature prior to starting your machine unless it has a warming cycle. From a financial standpoint, as you are trying to be thrifty, Sam's club sells a 2 pack of 1 pound bricks of yeast for not much more than a 4 ounce jar at the grocery store. In my area $4.24 compared to $3.99. I prefer to spend the extra 24 cents and give a pound away. Best price on bread flour in my area too. Good luck with the bread. ... View related article.

RE: How Can I Tell If Something is Made of Silver
My grandmother and great aunt worked for International Silver in Meriden Connecticut around the 1940's so I have quite a few of their pieces, A lot of their pieces were silvered glass (see photo) but they also have solid silver as well as silver plated pieces so your sugar bowl could be either one. All of them have been popular among collectors and if I remember correctly, International Silver (still in business as far as I know) is the oldest silver crafters in the U.S. As for the 8oz, sounds like it hold 8 ounces or 1 cup. ... RE: Removing Lint from Clothing
If the lint comes off easily try cleaning the lint screen and put them in the dryer on air dry, without the towels of course. Clean the lint screen every 5 minutes and keep restarting until loose lint is gone or screen is collecting no more lint. For anything that is not loose, after testing in an inconspicuous area to be sure it won't harm the fabric, try a piece of drywall sanding screen, this will grab the lint and works wonders on fabrics that have pilled as well. Polyesters knits in particular, don't always do well with this treatment. ... View related article.

RE: Removing Sharpie from Leather Shoes
I used to do some leather working and it may help to know that if you cannot get it all the way out or you mar the finish trying you can paint over it with a little bit of white acrylic latex paint to cover it. This is the water based stuff, you might even have a can around from painting your walls or trim. Just watch the sheen you use, sneakers or tennis shoes would probably need a satin sheen. Foam works best for applying it as it won't leave brush marks. ... View related article.

RE: Cleaning Varnished Wood
You don't want to use anything stronger than you have to so try these suggestions in this order.

A strong batch of Murphy's oil soap with very, very hot water and a you can even use a light duty scruffy pad or sponge. I would not take any chances on this use the 3m scotchbrite white non scratching one, anything grittier will dull the varnish similar to sanding between coats when varnish is applied. I would not trust the cheap ones to not be too rough. By very, very hot water I use the hottest I can get from my tap and I add 2 quarts of boiling water, put on two pairs of cotton gloves for insulation topped by a pair of rubber gloves. The extreme heat will usually soften the grease enough to remove it. be sure to dry the wood as you go.

The Morphy's oil soap and scruffy usually does the trick but if that does not work you can try mineral spirits. Just be sure to test it in an inconspicuous area first on each different type of wood surface. If one of these wood surfaces is not varnished or the varnish has worn off, the mineral spirits could darken the wood substantially. The only place I have ever had to resort to this was directly over a stove. Be sure to wipe up any remaining mineral spirits and even give it a quick wash with a regular batch of Murphy's oil soap to remove any you might have missed. Good luck and happy cleaning! ... RE: Organizing Debit Card Receipts
I wrap my receipts around the card and immediately put it back in my wallet. This gets tricky where they check your receipt at the door, here I put my card away at the register and I put the receipt away in the car before leaving to avoid accidentally losing my wallet, card or receipt. Once I have gotten home and finished unpacking my items, or, at the latest before I go to bed each night, I enter them into Quicken. This is a program that I consider well worth the money (when I have to purchase it) for tracking where our money is being spent, as well as reconciling the accounts and I can usually get away with only upgrading every 2 years. Many times, this is given to me by someone who has just bought the newer version. In the event I do misplace a receipt, the onestep update downloads the transaction for me to review. The simplicity of viewing where our money is going has really helped us realize where money was being wasted. This has worked wonders for us for almost 20 years now. ... View related article.

RE: Perfume Bottle Sprayer is Stuck
Remove everything off the top so that you can see the tube that goes into the bottle then try sticking a small straightened paper clip in the top of the tube until you hit something solid. There is a spring and ball in there that you may be able to knock loose. If this does not work let me know, I have another idea. ... View related article.
