RE: Help With Furniture Placement
I recommend sticking with a loveseat and two complimentary chairs (which are identical). I would place the love seat parallel to the fireplace wall - facing fireplace and TV, and place chairs perpendicular to it on either side. I like the idea of a small writing desk on the half wall opposite the fireplace. Keep it simple and add some nice larger accent pieces of art. I've seen friends use about a dozen frames all painted the same color that literally had nothing inside them. It was cool. Also, painting mismatched frames in the same color with photos in all black and white is a neat effect. But, you asked about the furniture, didn't you?

Have fun! And, never pay full price (or use credit) for furniture! ... View related article.

RE: Homemade Ant Killer
When we lived in Texas, I discovered that soapy water was the most effective tool against fire ant mounds. I used one gallon (recycled milk jug) of hot water and added about a teaspoon of dish liquid. Pour over the mound and it will be gone within 24 hours!

For indoors, I just wipe up lines of ants with a soapy dish cloth, then find the source and - you guessed it - give them all a soapy bath! ... View related article.

RE: Recipes Using Potatoes
I love a wonderful potato salad! Lots of recipes available online.

Also, we like to make mock potato skins by slicing the potato lengthwise with the peel still on. I spray the pan and place potatoes almost touching, then spray the tops of the potatoes. Bake for about 15 minutes. After they are soft, sprinkle with cheese, bacon bits and serve with sour cream.

I also like to use my salad shooter and grate potatoes directly into hot oil in little "bird's nests" and make awesome hash browns. Sprinkle with a litte salt and serve with ketchup.

Just a few of our faves.

I had the same idea as you about using potatoes more (to cut the grocery bills) and I went onto allrecipes dot com and came up with some good variations on old favorites.

RE: Causes of Bloating and Gas
I would recommend limiting sugar in the diet first of all. Yeast and other harmful bacteria thrive on it and can cause bloating. Also, everyone would benefit from a bowel cleanse at least once a year. Beyond that, eliminate milk from your diet and if symptoms persist, have your gall bladder checked. Hope these suggestions help. ... View related article.

RE: Laundry Table Top
I would coat the fabric with either a clear polyurethane paint or this stuff they sell in hobby stores that sort of pours on but dries like a sheet of plexiglass on top.

Looks nice and thanks for the great tip! ... View related article.

RE: Suggestions for Perennial Flowers
I live in central Missouri and I absolutely LOVE my Hardy Mums. I have a number of colors and I tend to split them up -- that is transplant a bit of the root to another location in the yard -- every spring. They look dead at end of winter, but the tops just need to be trimmed off. They will be bright green all summer and bloom in the Fall. They require almost no attention at all here in Missouri once they have taken root. I get a whole yard full out of a few plants after a couple of years of splitting them up.

Good Luck!

RE: Suggestions for Indoor Plants
I have a hibiscus (they look like a tree-like bush and flower big orange flowers in the summer time) that is doing great in my front hall and really enjoys the front porch in summer. Mine is red orange, but a quick image search will show you that they come in a wide range of colors. ... View related article.

RE: Homemade Automatic Shower Cleaner Refills
For disinfecting, you need only use 1 teaspoon of bleach to a gallon of water. This is state approved for daycares in Missouri. Don't over do on bleach -- it's not good for your lungs. ... View related article.

RE: Use Bandannas for Cloth Napkins
I made 64 cloth napkins out of an old sheet we never used. I have two babies in the house during the day and use these exclusively (not including diaper changes -- their moms buy wipes).

Sheets are the cheapest way to get cloth napkins. I used pinking shears, so there was no sewing involved.
