RE: Substituting Wax Paper For Parchment Paper
No, I'm afraid you can't. Wax paper will burn in the oven. Try a grocery store instead of Joann's for parchment paper. Most any big grocery store should have it, and it will likely be cheaper there too. Or you can order it online in bulk at: www.thebakerscatalogue.com, or www.KingArthurFlour.com.
Hope these help!
P.S. Whoops, pays to read carefully, doesn't it? You are wanting to know for *cake-decorating purposes*. Well, for that as well, only parchment paper will work. It is stiffer than wax paper, which eventually gets soft and squishy--not what you want when practicing cake decorating! Parchment will hold up for many, many times of use, on the other hand.

RE: Making Your Own Brown Sugar
I like to make my own dark brown sugar (I prefer dark to light as dark brown sugar gives a deeper, richer flavor) with that good ol' Southern staple/treat--sorghum! dee-licious. :-)

RE: Sides That Go With Quiche
How about a good mixed salad and some garlic toast? Or--my hubby and I like chilled applesauce, and my homemade wholewheat bread spread with butter.

RE: Cream Cheese Spread Recipes
Hi, Maryeileen!

I have a few ideas for you:

First, leave the cream cheese out to soften on the counter about 30 min. to an hour. Stir it real well at that point.

Add one of the following:

A couple tablespoons chopped, dried chives

A couple tablespoons honey

A teaspoon or so, to start, of a spice or herb that suits your fancy, such as dried cilantro (or fresh), or oregano, parsley, dill, etc. etc. I would think that fresh herbs and spices would bring more "zing" to your spread, however.

Along that line, I highly recommend the little tubes of herb mixtures that are in the produce section over in the fresh herbs division. I have tried the dill mixture for dill salad sandwiches and it is OUT OF THIS WORLD! My husband just raves over the "dill in the tube" as he calls it. The flavor is so bright and fresh. Try one of those for your spread; there are many other herbal combos besides dill.

You could also try mixing in:

A handful of mini-chocolate chips; a half banana and teaspoon of lemon juice; coarsely chopped pecans or walnuts and either green or black olives--or both.

HTH,

Bron (aka 'gigglemagoo')
