RE: Sticking to a Weight Loss Program
I too have the same problem, but now I am on my third week and going strong. I found a site called The Daily Plate, which you put in how much weight you want to lose each week (I am only trying for 2 pounds a week to be realistic). Then you put in everything you eat and it counts the calories for you. You can also put in your exercise and then it adds more calories (so you can eat more if you want to). I try not to eat more when I exercise as that seems to defeat the purpose.

I like the one day to "cheat" also but I use it for any day of the week when I am having a very lousy day and just can't seem to stay on track. Some weeks it may be the weekend and others the week day. I have been losing and gaining weight for four years now. I first lost 60 pounds on Weight Watchers and it worked wonderfully for me, but then I gradually put back on 45 pounds and now am trying to lose that again. Weight Watchers doesn't work for me anymore, so I have to try something else and so far this is working. I lost 7 pounds the first week and 2 the second and tomorrow is my weigh-in for the third week so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I know it also helps to be accountable to someone else. If you don't have a friend that you can call or e-mail I'd be glad to be your "weight-loss friend". I also know that if you take your measurements that helps because even if you don't lose weight but lose inches that is an improvement. Good luck and don't give up. By the way, it took me one year to lose sixty pounds so I know it is a long struggle, but worth it in the end if you can keep it off, which is what I am determined to do this time. Hope this helps. ... View related article.

RE: Butter vs. Margarine: You Decide
I can't remember what I grew up eating, probably margarine, because I came from a large family and it was cheaper. When I moved out on my own I bought margarine because of the price compared to butter. It was four pounds of margarine equaled one pound of butter cost-wise. Until one day (this was after I was married and had my own kids) I was listening to the radio and a dietician/nutritionist was talking about the difference between butter and margarine. I couldn't believe the stuff that was in margarine. I became so horrified and grossed out about putting margarine in my body that I decided right then and there to switch. I proceeded to throw out my margarine and replace it with butter immediately. When my kids had to start eating butter, of course, they hated the taste, but I wouldn't back down and they got used to it. Now, many years (10, at least) later they cannot stand margarine and know right away if they are somewhere else and they have margarine. They will go without it. I have switched 100%, using butter in baking and never having another ounce of margarine in my house ever. I also use the olive oil as I know it is better. Whenever I see the price of butter going up I think "Oh well, I spend money on things that aren't necessary so if I spend a little more on butter, I am doing something healthy for my family and it is worth every penny". ... RE: Getting Kids To Reuse Towels
I had the same problem so for Christmas this year our kids (5) each got their own set of towels (2) and each have their own color so they know which one is theirs. They make more of an effort to hang them up and if they don't they know which ones are theirs so they reuse them even if they haven't hung them up. I also will hang them up and refold them, but they know which color is theirs so they are reusing their own towels and not someone else's. ... View related article.

RE: Cereal Bags for Kitchen Chores
I just love this site. You can learn so many money saving ideas. I thought I knew everything about saving things. My kids go nuts when I tell them to save the yogurt cups and lids from ice cream pails to use when we go camping for cups and plates, but this idea is so great I can't wait to try it. ... RE: Washing a Down Jacket
I bought a yellow down jacket from a garage sale (knowing it wouldn't be yellow for long). I figured since I only paid five dollars for it I wouldn't be out that much if it didn't work to wash it in the washing machine. I gave it a try and it came out fabulously. Just make sure to dry it completely in the dryer. I dried it on a lower setting for longer just because I thought the hottest setting would be too much for it. I didn't even dry it with tennis balls or anything else to fluff it up and it came out nicely fluffed. Now I can wear it without worrying about getting it clean as it probably lasts about two weeks before it needs another good cleaning. ... View related article.

RE: Recipes Using Mashed Potatoes
First of all I want to give you a good mashed potato recipe:

About 5# peeled potatoes, quartered and boiled til soft.
Mash and add:
8 oz. cream cheese
1 stick butter
1 teaspoon garlic or onion salt or both
1 teaspoon seasoned salt

Add enough milk so it is the consistency you like (I never seem to need the milk).

For leftover mashed potatoes I mix the potatoes with:
Bacon (bake in oven and crumble)
Sausage (I use the kind that just needs heating otherwise fry sausage first and cut up)
Cheese (any kind shredded)
Onion (flakes or chopped)
Green Pepper (chopped)
Or anything else you can think of and bake at 350 for approximately a half an hour or until heated through. Serve with any meal as you would mashed potatoes. My family likes these more than mashed potatoes so I never have to worry about leftover mashed potatoes (I actually plan to have leftovers so I can make this). ... View related article.

RE: Adding Volume to Thin, Fine Hair
I'm 48 years old and have always had thin, fine hair. I don't dye or perm it either, so I guess that is part of my problem, but I don't want to do that. My niece is a hair dresser and when I complained to her she told me to buy a shampoo called "Big Sexy Hair". It comes in a red bottle and is quite spendy ($12 to $15 a bottle). But it works. The bottle is quite large so if you are the only one using it, it will last a long time, especially when you have fine, thin hair you don't have to use much shampoo. I'd love to hear how it works if you do try this. ... View related article.

RE: Bananas Turning Brown in Banana Cream Pie
Eat it faster. Just kidding. In our house the pie lasts about five minutes so the bananas don't have a chance to turn brown. If I know the pie will not be eaten right away I coat the banana slices with lemon juice. Just pour a small amount of lemon juice in a bowl (enough so when you lay the banana in it, it covers the whole banana slice). Try not to get a lot o excess juice on the banana slice or the pie will taste too much like lemon. ... View related article.
