RE: How Do Dogs Get Heartworms?
Heart worms are not rare and they WILL kill a dog if left untreated.
Heart worms are from mosquitos and like one poster said, a dog's hair cannot protect him from being bitten. Please get your dog treated asap. ... View related article.

RE: Breaking Up a Dog Fight
As a professional dog trainer, I must disagree with your suggestion of throwing water on fighting dogs.
When two dogs are fighting, the best thing to do is get another person to help you. Get behind one of the dogs and grab it's back feet at the ankles (if you can). Pull the dog away from the other one and put a leash on the dog if you have one. The other person can either do the same to the other dog or just put a leash on it and get it under control.
When a dog is engaged in a fight, it's brain is only focused on fighting and nothing else. Calling the dog, yelling at the dog and grabbing the dog by the collar will not work, in fact, you are likely to get bit even if you are the dog's owner. The dog doesn't care who you are or what you are doing, all it wants to do is kill the other dog.
Water might work but not likely. I suppose if you were to spray the dog up it's nose so it can't breathe, that might slow him down but it won't contain him when his brain is excited in fighting.
Pepper spray will work and it does sound harsh to use this on your dog but it's better than your dog getting killed or maimed. ... View related article.

RE: Dog Shedding
Many breeds of dogs naturally shed and there isn't any way to stop it. Dogs have to shed the old hair to grow new hair, just like people.
You can, however, control it to a point by daily brushing. I have three dogs and two of them shed horribly. I could 'build' a new dog from the hair the other dogs leave behind!!
I brush my dogs and pull out the vacuum cleaner and suck up all the clumps.

RE: Pitbull Puppy Won't Eat
Holy cow!!! Who in the world allowed you to have such a young puppy?????
This baby is waaaaay too young to be away from it's mother. No wonder it won't eat!!!
Take your baby to the vet and they will advise you on what type of formula the puppy needs until it's old enough to eat solid food.
I also have another concern about the pup being taken away from it's mother and litter mates so soon. Unless your pup is exposed to other animals and people handling it, it's probably going to develop socialization problems. This is a very critical time in the development of the pup's life and without the needed exposure, your pup will grow into a dog with behavioral issues. Your puppy is a Pitt Bull and the last thing you need is a Pitt with people aggression and/or dog aggression issues. Your pup could also become just the opposite; shy, fearful of people and other animals and could possibly become a fear biter.
I don't mean to scare you but I am a professional dog trainer and many of the dogs I train are from shelters and rescues and many of the behavioral problems I see could have been avoided in the early developmental stage of their lives.
Good luck and please get your baby to the vet NOW. ... View related article.

RE: Controlling Barking
Not sure what a "Morkie" is but if it barks, it must be a dog!! :-)
If you have exhausted every idea you can think of teaching your dog not to bark constantly, I suggest a no-bark collar. This is a self-teaching collar and comes in all sizes. I use one on my German Shepherd who loves to bark at squirrels in my yard. I purchased the collar online from: http://www.gundogsupply.com
These collars were designed for field dogs but work for any dog that drives everyone crazy with the constant, non-stop barking.
Be sure to read the instructions carefully and follow them carefully. Your dog will have to be 'conditioned' to wearing the collar. The reason for this is that many dogs are quite intelligent and quickly learn when the collar is active and when it isn't. The instructions explain how to 'condition' your dog to the collar and it's only a matter of getting the dog accustomed to having the collar on and off.

RE: Cleaning My Labs Ears
I have three dogs and they all get dirty ears from playing in our back yard. Like Edie Parks said, it's not easy to actually get to the eardrum so you can clean pretty far down. Two of my dogs have floppy ears and the third dog is a German Shepherd so his ears stand up high and are easy to clean. I buy a roll of Johnson & Johnson cotton, tear off a long piece and form it into a wick by rolling it between my hands. Before I use it, I apply ear cleaner (from the vet) in the dogs' ears, wet the wick, then twisting gently, manuever the wick down into the ear canal. Pull out slowly and you will get most of the gunk out. I also use a small, thin wash cloth in the bath to clean where I can see. ... View related article.

RE: Inuki (Husky/German Shepherd)
Inuki is a beautiful dog!!! My husband has owned several Huskies in the past and they truly are strong willed and stubborn. Our last Husky, Savannah, had a personality like a cat. She was extremely aloof, very stubborn and wouldn't even respond to her own name. ... View related article.

RE: Good Dog Breeds for Hot Weather
I'm sure you will find a lot of great information on the Internet regarding your quest. I know what you mean though. I live in Central Florida and our weather is miserable in the Summer. I keep my dogs indoors during that time and let them out to do their 'business' of course and only walk them in the evening. You have to be careful about hot sidewalks. If it's too hot for your bare foot, it's too hot for them. Carry plenty of water for you and your dogs.
I believe most dogs will adapt to most any weather but you certainly wouldn't want to have an English Sheepdog living outside year round in Texas although I'm sure some people do.
I've seen all sorts of dogs here INCLUDING an Old English Sheepdog!! It belongs to a lady who runs a doggie specialty store.
Just a funny thought....how about a Mexican Hairless?? lol. ... View related article.

RE: Is Peanut Butter Okay for Dogs?
I give my dogs peanut butter on occasion and it is great for helping the pills go down if you have to give your dog medicine. Be careful though, some dogs have allergies just like people and can have a terrible reaction. Start out with just a teenie taste on the end of your finger. I would give them all natural PB without nuts. ... View related article.

RE: Is it ever acceptable to strike a dog?
I hope by now this issue has been resolved. The only time a dog should be hit is if it's biting you and you are in a desperate situation.
It never ceases to amaze me that people aquire pets but don't take the time to train them or get them trained properly. I always blame the owners, never the pets. ... View related article.
