| RE: What Kind of Tree is This? |
|
Thanks so much for your tree link! After poking around at the site a little bit, it turns out that what we have growing here in Gilroy, CA is Brachychiton Populneus. That is an exact match! It is a relief to find that the seeds are edible as it is planted at a sports complex used by children. ... View related article. |

| RE: What Kind of Tree is This? |

Thanks for the suggestion. The place here that sells trees knows nothing. County Agent? What's that? How do I find one? Several friends and I have all looked at all the pictures in all of our tree books (5 different books!), but can't find anything with that leaf formation. Surely someone has seen it somewhere and can give me a clue?? ... View related article. |

| RE: Making Vests With Pre-Quilted Fabric |
|
To make a really FLAT flat-felled seam with quilted fabric do this. Make standard 5/8" seams. Trim one side of the seam down to 1/4" or slightly less. Pull out all the batting you can from this layer. On the other side of the seam trim the inside fabric down to 1/4", pull out all the batting you can from this layer. Fold the outside of the fabric over the raw edges and stitch on the edge to make your flat-felled seam. I use a zig-zag stitch to make it really flat. ... View related article. |

| RE: Making a Table Cloth from a Doily Pattern |
I have Coats & Clark's book of pineapple patterns from 1946. Contact me with your mailing address and I will copy and send a couple of patterns that will enable you to make a pineapple doily of as large a diameter as you wish. The directions are too long to copy here. You might also check the magazine stands in craft stores and book stores for crochet magazines that might have a pineapple pattern. ... | RE: Small Wildlife Under a House |

When you do finally get rid of the critters you need to make sure the skirting on your mobile home is tight without any holes for them to get in again. We have lived in a mobile home park for 16 years. Critters can get into smaller holes than you can imagine. Stuff the small holes with foil. Use boards on the larger holes. A couple of cats would help keep the critters away, too. ... View related article. |

| RE: Trellising Grape Vines |
|
Better build a strong trellis! I used 2"x2" poles after the vines and grapes became too heavy for bamboo poles. Planted 2 vines in 1996 and now they cover the whole front end of our single-wide mobile home. Once they get started you can't ever get rid of them. They have to be cut way back every Fall just like roses. I haven't ever done anything but water ours and it is still almost out of control every year. ... View related article. |

The Salvation Army store or any thrift store are good places to get saucers for your pots. Get a plate with edges that curve up a little to keep the water off the deck. You can get plates to fit just about any size pot. ... View related article. |

| RE: Setting Dye in Silk Fabric |
|
Update on original question: These are handkerchief silk garments that are commercially dyed. I have no idea what they use for dye. Do you mean that I should use the vinegar/water recipe and heat the water with the garment in the water? I tried soaking one of them in straight vinegar overnight, but only got pink vinegar. Rinsed several times after the vinegar, but it still bleeds. ... View related article. |

| RE: Too Many Unfinished Craft Projects |
|
Keep in mind that you can "finish" a project by choosing to "not to finish" it. Then put all the materials and instructions in a big ziploc and take it to your local Senior Center. There are usually people there who like to have these projects. Just because you started something doesn't mean that you must finish it! Sometimes we start things in a different "craft" and find out it isn't one we wish to pursue. ... View related article. |

| RE: Getting Started with Quiltmaking |
Make your quilt top with squares as Redhatter describes. I usually make my squares about 9". Don't even bother with batting. The 40" x 60" "microfleece" throws that you can get at the drugstore or WalMart are the perfect size for a child. Or sew 2 of them together side by side for a twinbed size quilt. You can also get larger ones at Target or WalMart if you want to make a fullsize or queensize quilt all in one piece.
Lay your quilt top on top of the micro fleece. Pin along all the seam lines then stitch with a zigzag that overlaps the seams. It is easier to sew these quilting seams on your sewing machine if you roll up the quilt so it fits through the space on your machine. Bind the edges with bias binding made from some of your scraps. It is easier to bind corners if you round them off using a salad plate for the curve. A quilt made this way is almost indestructible. For more instructions try about.com and put quilts in the search box. ... View related article. |
