RE: Mildew Smell from Homemade Laundry Detergent
It is incredibly cheaper not to mention healthier for you and the water supply. We have a well and I wouldn't use anything else now.
Also no plastic jugs or packaging left to deal with. Win/Win/Win

And yes I do put vinegar in the rinse cycle. Removes all the soap, softens the water and clothes, and no static cling.

RE: Making a Mosaic Back Splash
As long as the backerboard is waterproof it should not be a problem.
make sure the mastic (adhesive) you use is also waterproof.

I just did behind my sink with old mexican tiles and it worked out fine. ... View related article.

RE: Homemade Lamp Oil
I was WRONG!
You can use most any oil in an old kerosene type lamp!!
In fact you don't even need the old lamp. I just made one in
a jar with a cotton wick, piece of pumice stone (they float) and
OLIVE OIL.
No recipe and nothing fancy but it works just fine.
Just google "olive oil" lamp and you will find lots of info.
Or go to Lehmans and get the parts to make a fancy one. ;)

RE: Convention Decorating with Recycled Materials
Some thoughts....
You might want to do something a bit upscale but fun ....
www.greenglass.com

For the computer guys (isn't every lawyer carying alaptop?)
Catching solar energy with a bag to power iPod and even the laptop are very popular. They come in cloth or leather.

And definitely find a caterer that has an understanding of cooking with regional locally grown foods.
They would also have ideas and connections to local companies that do creative things with recycled materials.

RE: Recyclethis - British Recycling Website
Great site, Thanks!

This post was exceptionally good and funny!
I just cleaned out my bathroom cabinets and have
the same dilema. Now I know where to go with these 'no longer needed items'. :)

RE: Making 55 Easy Princess Wands
how about dowels from the hardware store... or any 'stick'
and use those old bows and ribbons from christmas.

Staple the bow on the stick and add all the flying ribbons you want.

If nothing else the cat will love to chase it. ;)
We make one every christmas for our cats.

RE: Substitutes for Canned Soups
Whenever we have a chicken (fairly often) or turkey ettc.
I boil the carcass for several hours along with any leftover veggies in the fridge. Celert stumps, broccolli stems, ends of onions, etc.

Chill the broth and then seperate the meat bones and spent veggies.
What is left is a great broth that I freeze in old cottage cheese containers.
When I need broth or soup.... I go to the freezer!
To replace the onion soup just use the above broth only stew again with several onions (include the skins) That is what restaurants do.

RE: What Can I Use Instead of Bran?
migth try using oatmeal. Oat bran is available
but you might try grinding regular oatmeal in a food processer until somewhatt fine and add the same amount to your recipe.

I do this with several recipes including cookies.

RE: Help with Water Bath Canning
I am not so sure you want to water bath can dried beans unless
you have cooked them first. Dried beans will eventually soak up the water in the jar, expand and probably break the seal if not the whole jar.

I can baked beans ...
first making a batch of baked ins in the crock pot.
While still hot I spoon into a clean sterilized warm jar then seal
in my canner. I use a steam canner so it only takes about 10 minutes to get a good seal.

Never did potatoes on their own, but the process doesn't change alot.
I am sure there are some websites that could help.

If you really want to store the dry beans for a long time you might consider an vacuum sealer. I have a vacupak that has a hose and cover for sealing canning jars.

RE: Set Your Sights High
Henry you are SOOOO wrong.
The scenario you describe is only good if you accept being in debt forever and working to stay in debt forever.

ANd stock portfolios are risky to say the least.
I have paid off two mortgages and stashing everything I can for an early retirment. It won't be long now. ;)
I'm with Walt and Karyn... pay it off get out of debt and kiss your job goodbye!
