In Canada, you can check to see if a charity is legitimate by checking the Charities Directorate on the government website. Legitimate charities are registered and have a BN number.
I would not give money at the door. If the charity proved legitimate after checking the above, I would mail a donation if I liked the cause. Then you know it went to the charity for sure. ... View related article.
Hi Melody! Punkin is gorgeous! Best way to prevent Punkin from moving to "greener pastures"is to spay her before her first heat (at about 5 or 6 months of age). It is the best money ever spent.
If spayed, Punkin will not roam in search of mates, and be more content to stay home. She will live longer, and get fewer cancers, etc..
Spaying her will mean fewer unwanted kittens in the world... thousands of unwanted cats are killed in shelters because there aren't enough homes for them all. Please encourage your neighbour to spay her cat. A happy cat has a responsible owner! Thanks for posting! ... View related article.
About a 50% chance now, and the vet bill will be huge. Prevention (vaccination) is far cheaper than the cure. The sad thing is that survivors of parvo often die unexpectedly before they are 5 years old. Suspicion is this is due to organ damage by parvo.
Your yard is contaminated now. You cannot bring an unvaccinated dog in it, or it can easily get sick too. You need to be pet free for a good year, as the virus lives in the soil.
An animal must be FULLY vaccinated (boosted too) in order to be safe in your yard. Pick up and burn poo and dog bedding. Pick up Vircon at (eg) UFA Farmstores along with a weed sprayer and douse everything in your yard. If the pup came into the house, douse the house too. Yes, I mean soak the couch too.
Bleach will work, Vircon is better. The volume you need will cost about $170.
You can spread the virus on your hands, shoes, and clothing. You can drive it out on your vehicle tires. You need to thoroughly treat everything or you put all the neighbourhood dogs at risk too. Please post that parvo is in the neighbourhood so others who have not vaccinated get the heads up to do so. Sorry to have dour news.
I purchase enzymatic cleaners such as Nature's Miracle or Petzyme at the petstores. It is pretty good stuff.
I was just told a new method though, that may work for you. Pour plenty of baking soda on the soiled carpet, and wet it with water into a paste. Scrub it into the carpet.
Pour a 2L container of club soda on top of the soda mixture. Cover it with an old, thick, heavy towel, and leave it be for about four days to dry. Don't rub it or anything.
Apparently the bubbling soda works the mess up into the towel. The towels absorbs what is purged from the carpet and keeps it from being reabsorbed. The soda deodorizes everything.
What a kind-hearted young man Brady is! You must be very proud of him. It is so sad when older animals get rejected by people, and few are given second chances even though they have years of love left. Thank you for sharing your story and picture! ... View related article.
Cats are not as independent as people would like to think. They are social creatures, and need plenty of attention. Twice a week for a full month is not enough attention for the poor thing, especially without another feline companion.
There are dangers in all sorts of things too.I came home to find one of my cats dead, strangled in a bedspread fringe once. It was extremely traumatic, as I consider my cats members of my family.
I would enlist more friends and neighbours to come by, so ideally kitty is visited once per day.
I would put out more litter boxes too. My cousin had her mom look after her cat; Mom shut the bedroom door, cutting off kitty's access to her poopy box. Kitty used the leather couch instead!
Many insurance policies are void if your house is not checked daily as well.
One of my cats started peeing on my bed. I took him to the vet and had a urinary infection ruled out. He is an anxious cat, and that is how he decided to "communicate" with me!
His brother, also strung too tightly, pees on the couch. He began when I looked after a teenager for a few months, and never stopped, even though the boy is now gone.
All my cats are fixed (first thing to do!), and I have gone through scads of PetZyme and Nature's Miracle.
The best thing I have found is medication! The vet prescribed imipramine, and it is wonderful!
This is an antianxiety. antidepression medication. It has made my two furry boys much happier, and far, far less pissy.
Also, get an inexpensive "cat piller" while you're at it! It makes giving a difficult cat a pill way easier once you perfect the technique.
Approximately 30% of parvo puppies receiving vet treatment still die.
A puppy should start its vaccination schedule at six weeks (both rabies and the multi-shot that covers parvo, distemper, etc.). If its mother was vaccinated against parvo, it will have maternal immunity until about this time (six weeks of age). The pup then requires a booster for the multi-shot one month later.
Be sure you scour the yard and anywhere pup has gone to the bathroom thoroughly. I was happy to read you've doused your house with bleach. The virus can live in the soil for over a year. You don't want to bring any other pup into the home that isn't fully vaccinated (both vaccinated and boosted a month later).
I hope your collie is up-to-date on its shots. If not, whip it into your vet and get it done!
Please post signs at your off-leash park and areas where you've walked your pup indicating that the virus could be present in the area and contaminate others. Hopefully any others that are not vaccinated will also be taken to the vet for shots.
Maiya is beautiful, such spark in her eyes. I have to agree with Marfette. I do a lot of volunteer work with animal rescue, and the statistics on unwanted animals being euthenized in shelters due to overpopulation is horrifying. In seven years, one cat and her issue can give rise to 420 000 kittens.
If you give the kittens away, you cannot ensure that they are treated well either. Sadly abusers also get their victims through "free to good home" ads.
Be frugal, and spay kitty now! It is a lot cheaper than spaying and neutering many. I've spayed and neutered 12... they came to me mostly one at a time (one momma cat was delivered to my door giving birth to two babies)! But none of them ever reproduced again. There aren't enough homes in the world for them all.
