Like most people now days, the price of gas and utilities has eaten away at my pocket book yet my income hasn't changed one iota! But then I am pretty lucky to even have a job since my employer has sold off parts of their company. On top of that I am disabled and just waiting for the point where I won't be able to work at all. So I'm here to learn to be as frugal as possible. I currently rent, love to shop thrift stores and rummage sales and enjoy crafts.
There is actually a kit you can buy to convert a 2 liter bottle into a feeder. The brand name is Gadjit. If you google it, you'll see what I'm talking about. You can also buy hummingbird feeder "tubes" that you can put into any bottle-type container. They look like a cork with the familar tube that the hummers feed out of. Just google "hummingbird feeder tubes" and you will find them. They are relatively inexpensive. ... View related article.
A friend once told me how to get rid of fleas in the house. You can get them off your pet but the little buggers can still survive in your carpet and upholstery. He said to use borax. Sprinkle it on your seats and carpet. Rub it in, using gloves, with a brush or broom. Let it sit for 24 to 72 hours. Vacuum it up along with all the dead fleas. I belong to a "Garden Junk" forum at another site and I'm amazed at the cool planters people have come up with - old shoes with holes in them, a retired bike helmet, old sinks and bathtubs, wringer washers, wheel barrows and even an old row boat. I've seen something as simple as 5 gallon buckets someone got free from a restaurant to an old barbeque grill found while curbside shopping. Someone even used an old freezer that they laid on its back. Pretty much anything you can stick dirt in will work. ... View related article.
Maybe I'm not frugal enough but I have purchased slipcovers from Surefit.com for my worn out furniture. The covers, depending upon the fabric, can last for years and are machine washable. They make stretch covers for recliners ranging in price from $60-$70 right now. I have also bought Surefit covers on eBay for less. I would repair the cracks with duct tape and then cover the chair with a slip cover. It looks great and costs considerably less than a new chair.
Otherwise the earlier suggestion for the leather/dash repair might work as well. Good luck! ... View related article.
