RE: Fat Free Corn Tortilla Chips or Strips
OK, I tried this today. DH goes through about two bags of Doritos per week. He likes the thick crunchy kind for dipping with salsa. I bought a bag of corn tortillas for 1.24 ( Doritos are nearly 4.00), I took out a stack of about 10 tortillas, cut them in half down the middle and then cut each half into thirds making pie shaped wedges. I placed them on cookie sheets overlapping slightly and put them into my convection oven at 250 for 10 to 15 minutes, then just turned off the oven and left them until they cooled enough to take the pans out bare handed. After cooling them completely I served DH some chips and salsa. WOW what a hit. He especially liked the batch that I let get "too brown" as he loves that toasted corn flavor. I like these too and they are robust enough to stand up to the thickest salsa. Thanks a million for posting this tip. It is a real winner. ... View related article.

RE: Calcium Deposits on Glass
Try vinegar if you want to avoid the harsh fumes from clr or tilex. spray it on full strength from a spray bottle, let sit a few minutes and wipe down with one of those wonderful microfiber cloths. ... View related article.

RE: Borax To Rid Your House Of Pests
Yes, the Borax does tend to get wet when you mop. You can handle this one of two ways. You can go ahead and sweep the powder up just prior to mopping and then wait until the floor dries completely and re-apply or you can wipe it up with a wet cloth and re-apply when completely dry. For years I kept Borax in my cabinets on a regular basis because I lived in multi-family housing. In a single family home however a week should be a long enough period unless your infestation is very heavy.

I'm not sure this will be all that effective against ants, though it will help. They tend to follow their own trails, however and don't stick to baseboards and cabinet walls like other bugs do. The best deterrent for ants is orange or other citrus oil applied at the nest or at their entrance point to your home. ... View related article.

RE: How Do Dogs Get Heartworms?
According to my vet they are not at all rare in the US , in fact they are fairly widespread. They are transmitted through mosquito bites. Don't think your dogs fur will protect him or her, they can still be bitten. I had a dog once who died of heartworms ( I had never heard of them before) it wasn't a nice way for him to go. I now protect my dogs religiously. ... View related article.

RE: Painting Kitchen Cupboards
Here is how I painted mine: I took steel wool in a medium fine grade and full strength amonia (to clean off 4 decades of grime and to dull the finish) and washed the cabinets down. When completely dry, I primed them with Zinzer BIN primer. This is the most important step if you want the finish to last. When the primer was dry I carefully sprayed them with a good quality (not Walmart or off brand) spray paint.
I did this project in 2001 and there is not one chip, scratch or paint flake that I can find in spite of hard daily use and having two indoor dogs. Best of all, it is washable. ... View related article.

RE: Framing Newspapers
I have two thoughts. The first is to find some old windows with single pane of glass. Mount these with a hinge to a shallow box or even right to the wall and then put cork behind so that the newspapers can be thumbtacked in place and the "door" closed over them to protect them.
The other thought is to take inexpensive peg board, cut it to the size you want, outline the edges with thin wood strips such as lath or muliion. Mount plexiglass with glue or screws to the strips. Slip your newspapers behind the glass and hang by the pegboard back. You might have to mount the newspapers to some sort of stiff material using this method. ( such as mat board or illustration board) ... View related article.

RE: Dead Electrical Circuit
DH says the white should be equal to your ground. The ground should NOT be hot. You should be able to put an ohm meter between the white and ground and read 0 ohms. It is extremely dangerous for your ground to be hot. A1 important that you find out why your ground wire is hot. ... View related article.
