RE: Polish Peasant Recipes
I love cabbage and noodles! The only difference in my recipe is I saute onions, then throw in the cabbage.

Don't even get me started on a pierogi conversation...they come in a close second! (I fry kielbasa and then onions and pierogies) ... View related article.

RE: Carnation Breakfast Bars
I have tried this and it was not bad. http://www.budget101.com/recipes/id487.htm I used to have a breakfast bar on the bus every morning on the way to school in the 80's.

Hope this helps!

RE: Tips for Frying Chicken
My first tip is to add corn starch to your flour/spice mix(salt, pepper, garlic, etc). I use a large ziploc bag for this. Wash and dry the pieces and then shake in the flour/spice/corn starch mix. Place the chicken on a foil-lined cookie sheet and place in the fridge for 15-30 minutes. Take out and shake again, then put back in the fridge. During this time I heat up my CRISCO SHORTENING in a pan. The oil is good and hot by the time it is time to take the chicken out. I place about a teaspoon of butter in the oil (for flavoring). Take the chicken out, shake in the bag one more time and place in the oil. Turn down the heat to medium and place a lid on the pan (a clear lid works best). I was told by my two "southern chicken queens" at work to let the first side cook until the coating browns just past halfway up the chicken part before turning over.

Test with a toothpick or fork for clear juices. The whole cooking process for a batch should be 30-40 minutes.

The cornstarch helps the coating "puff" and the refrigerating between coats helps to "layer" or "build up" the coating.

Another tip; if you like BBQ or a hot wing type of chicken, heat the sauce of choice in a separate pot and then dip to coat upon taking the chicken out of the oil. ... View related article.

RE: Recipes Using Mashed Potatoes
You can add an egg, a little salt and flour to them and mix until like a dough (the amount of flour is dependent on the amount of potatoes you have). Then roll the dough into a snakelike form, cut into 3/4 to 1 inch pieces. Then steam or boil them (I prefer steaming, but have done both) and then serve with a nice spaghetti sauce or even pesto if you are so inclined.

RE: Refinishing Laminate Cabinets
There are several things that you can do. If you decide to go the painting route, get Zinsser B-I-N primer. This stuff sticks to ANYTHING! I even used it as a primer to cover the horrendous 1950's pink tile in my bathroom followed up by a high-gloss white. I also used it to prime my tile backsplash, which I then painted with a copper metalic paint. When I redid my kitchen I just replaced the doors and then used a woodgrain contact paper (yep, contact paper!) for the boxes themselves. I cannot see any reason why you could not do it for the doors as well. The "bonus" of the contact paper is that if you decide you don't like it or want a change.....just peel it off and do something else -- fairly cheap, too!

Get good measurements of your doors and then check places like Craigs List or Freecycle for people that are remodeling -- just because they do not like it does not mean you won't! ... View related article.

RE: Sewer Smell Coming from a Faucet
I am interested in the responses to this inquiry. I am having the same issue...only the upstairs bath. The one downstairs seems to be fine. I called the local water company and they did not have a clue what could cause it. Sure would like a remedy!

To pre-answer some questions: City water, no septic system, Prince Georges County Maryland. MtM ... View related article.

RE: Canning Recipes For Tomato Salsa
I dice up as many tomatoes as I have (red and green), add in onion and a little hot sauce, a splash of white vinegar and a splash of lime juice. I don't particularly care for cilantro, so I do not use it. ... View related article.

RE: Prepping Formica To Paint
I did not need to sand. I bought a small can of Zinsser B-I-N primer (Home Depot). This stuff sticks to ANYTHING. It is the same product that I used to prime and paint the 1950s pink tile in my bathroom (now a high-gloss white) and the horrid tile backsplash that was in my kitchen when I moved in (now a copper metallic...also from HD)

RE: Getting Rid of Ants
My mom and sister both had an ant issue (Florida). They both swear by Mop N Glo. For some reason it repels them and they don't come back.

RE: Painting Fiber Glass Shower Walls
I am actually going through this myself. At Home Depot I found a product called "Magic ReNew Tub and Tile Refinishing Kit". I found it on an endcap near the paint department...maybe $28. Anyhow, it comes with a "cold" can and a "hot" can. They are spraypaint can-like. You put one in the fridge to get it cold and then put the other in hot water to get it hot. Then you turn one into the other to mix the products. Once the one now-full can gets to room temperature you are good to go. If you can spraypaint, you can do this. Make sure you cover EVERYTHING else in the bathroom (I forgot to cover the floor). In the event that you get it on the floor or other item, a fine grade steel wool rubbed lightly on it will loosen it so you can sweep it up and clean it up with a mop or a rag.
