RE: River Birch Leaves Turning Brown
I have no idea what could be causing the problem, but i know that here in middle Georgia where i live, all our trees and bushes have leaves that are turning blackish brown in spotty areas (not all in one part of the tree/bush). It's the strangest phenonmenon i've ever seen and i'm planning on contacting our County Extension Agent tomorrow to see if he has any answers. ... View related article.

RE: Treating Yard to Prevent Worms in Dogs
Lime works very well. You can buy it by the bagfuls at home improvement stores (Lowe's, Home Depot, maybe Walmart) and just spread it all over your yard. It is inexpensive and won't hurt your puppy. Darween in Ga/USA ... View related article.

RE: Preventing Sweaty Foreheads With Antiperspirant
Sandy,
I'm very sorry for the discomfort you are experiencing, but glad that you are taking control of your problems in an intelligent and independent way.

However, I must warn you to something that you need to research. I also used to use antiperspirants, especially under my breasts because of excessive sweating and rashes.

However, after going through a horrendous summer last year with my right kidney, one day I happen to read the warning on the back of my antiperspirant bottle. I was shocked to see a warning about using it if you have kidney disease! I never thought something we apply to our skin could affect our internal organs.

I showed it to my doctor who told me she'd never noticed the warning either. The harmful ingredient is the antiperspirant, (not the deodorant), which is the aluminum-something or other. It is called different names on different antiperspirants. The one I'm looking at right now (which is the last one i was using before i stopped using them) is Aluminum Zirconium Pentachlorohydrex
After discovering this and doing some research about antiperspirants, i have begin to wonder about the connection between aluminum and Alzheimer's, and the first appearance of antiperspirants in our society. It's something to think about.

All antiperspirants have the aluminum in some form but plain deodorant doesn't.

I switched to plain deodorant after much frustrating searching at several stores.
I'm not thrilled with it but iId rather be safe and a little sweaty than very sorry down the road. And I'm thrilled to tell you that since I stopped using the antiperspirants my kidney problems have cleared up.

Why in the world this ingredient which is well known to harm us and allowed to be put into products that we use regularly on our bodies, is a travesty of the powers who are there to protect us. Much luck and let us know how you do.

p.s. i found out CLINIQUE has an all day sweat proof foundation that users swear by. you might want to check it out.

RE: Does Estroven Reduce Hot Flashes?
Being a vegetarian I started Estroven just as soon as I started going through the 'change' and I breezed right through it! I don't remember exactly how long I took it, something like 2 years, until I felt like I didn't need it anymore. It is the best stuff for migraines, which I've had all my life.

I never got ANY of the menopause symptoms that other women complain about. I think the instructions on the bottle are to take 2 each day but i only took one. Good luck to you! Once you get to the other side of menopause you will be very happy - these have been the best years of my life. ... View related article.

RE: Can Changing Food Kill a Dog?
First i am so very sorry for your loss.
Losing a beloved pet is right up there with losing a child.

I would like to thank 'speakeasy' for the link to the site about dogs and bloat. It is very informative. I tried sending a note to her but it wouldn't go thru.

We have goats we have lost to bloat so we are trying to learn as much as possible to prevent anymore deaths. We saved one young nanny recently.

We have a 4 yr old dog, a Lab, 'Leroy' who has a bad rash that our vet thinks is an allergy so she put him on predisone. It makes him bloat very badly and pass horrible smelling gas. I took him off of it and he's gotten much better, except for the mystery rash. i had no idea dogs can die from the bloat.

I would die if Leroy died from something i could have prevented if i'd only known how.
'Speakeasy', you not only may have saved his life but my own also!
Thank you for the link. ... View related article.

RE: Carbon on a Non-stick Frying Pan
I use salt and rub with a paper towel.
Make sure the pan is dry when using the salt,
when it's wet it just gums up and doesn't work.
The salt won't harm the non-stick interior.

This also works with cast iron skillets. ... View related article.

RE: What I Learned from Hurricane Katrina
Hi Diana!
Thanks for the great tips. Foresight is always so much better than hindsight!
After Katrina, my DH & I sat down & made a list of absolute essentials we'd need to "grab & run" with in case of emergency.
We pulled together prepacked "grab&run" bags. (suitcases)
We went around & found extras of things on our list to put in our bags, such as
*travel size toiletry kits
*first aid kits
*copies of important papers (prescriptions & such)
*extra underwear we're not using (at least a weeks worth)
Anything we can't prepack, we made a list to keep in the 'Grab Bags' of things we use everyday that can't be packed away.
In case of an emergency, We can glance down the list & quickly pull together these remaining items, without being sidetracked wasting valuable time scrounging up the other stuff (thats already packed). stuff like =
*our daily wall calendar, personal phonebook, medicines, treasured Bible etc..

It was actually fun doing this because when we finished, we looked around the house at what was left and wondered "Hey, if it's not important enough to grab & take with us, then why are we keeping it now?"

Alot of decluttering, selling, giving away will soon get done! : ) ... View related article.
