Depending on what type or size of lumber you have, creating sets of nicely sanded building blocks for children is one of the nicest ways to use up bits and pieces of wood. My hubby had a custom furniture and cabinet shop, and together we'd cut and sand pieces of 2"x"4"'s, 2"x6" 's and 1"x4"'s into great blocks for all our grandchildren. I sewed medium to large sized drawstring bags using bright-colored cotton fabric, and we filled the bags to brimming with natural wood building locks. I don't think anything was ever played with more than those blocks.
After our grandies grew up, we continued to make those bags of blocks and donated them to children's hospital gift shops. They went very quickly too. So obviously, many children loved the blocks. They inspire creativity as no other toys do, and if you sand them carefully, then add a coat of wax, they are much prettier than any store-bought blocks. Be sure to include some triangular cut blocks for making rooftops, and lots of pieces that are just plain log type. You are limited by your own imagination only.
Have fun while you're making them too. All the best, Julia in Boca Raton, FL ... View related article.
I make up our own "medicine" and use it regularly to clean the 6 kitty-cats' ears that we have now. We have one, our son has 5. They are completely indoor kitties, so once the ear mites are gone, we only have to use this solution to keep the ears clean about once or twice a month. If your cat goes outside, you'll have to watch it carefully and do a repeat when necessary. Just keeping the oil in the ears will help deter the mites from coming back...and they do not like it. Our medication is completely harmless, but do keep it in the ears and not on the face and eyes.
Mix equal parts of Olive Oil or Sweet Oil with Hydrogen Peroxide and Rubbing Alcohol (70% only). 1 oz oil, 1 oz hydrogen peroxide, 1 oz alcohol. Use a cotton ball to do the cleaning, but if the cat has ear mites, you might need to apply it with a dropper, and massage it deep into the ears. Don't try to put anything sharp down into the ears...That would hurt and possibly injure the cat.Apply this medication at least twice a day for a week or more..and afterward, keep a close watch on the ears to make sure the mites are no longer there, leaving their black "dirt" around.
Ear Mites can be one of the most painful and irritating things that can happen to our pets, and we can help. I never got anything from a vet that helped at all. An old lady told me about it, and I've been using it now for about 40 years. It works and works without doing any damage.
Just plain old olive oil helps keep the ears nice and clean when rubbed on and into the ears with a cotton ball. Good Luck... You are a good person to care about the poor cat and be willing to help her/him. One day people are going to be very sorry at the way we are allowing our animals to be treated. What goes around, comes around.
This is really a good idea. As the mother of 4 and their growing-up years having been some of the leanest in my life, I learned a few tricks about keeping everyone happy too. If the children helped me clip coupons, I'd give them half the amount of the face value of the coupon when we used it...providing they would eat or use whatever it was we bought. It taught them to eat some vegetables that they would never touch before and saved me a lot in allowances. They really had to work for their allowances, and helping with grocery costs was one way they earned whatever they got. Chores factored into allowances as well. I've watched my now-grown children doing the same things with their own children. It's amazing how much they learn doing these types of things. Just keeping track of their own coupons taught them a lot of math, and a lot about certain foods that were not allowed in our home. There are many ways of teaching good spending habits and good money management. I love your idea of the Five Dollar Cup. I will be passing it on. Thank You. Julia in Coconut Creek, FL ... Hi Carol, What an artistically creative lady you are. Your cupboard is lovely and I'm sure very functional. This is a great way to "redo" a vintage piece of wooden furniture or a brand new item the way you've done here. It's all the rage in today's marketplaces like Etsy.com and a few other places for selling handmade, altered and recycled materials. You did a really fine job and your piece is both colorful and fanciful. It will be so cheerful to live with. Don't stop now...You are good!
If this were for me or my child, I would seek the advice of a board certified dermatologist. I'm not so concerned about the skin tags, but I am concerned about the cysts which can mean several underlying problems that could lead to much large concerns. Some deodorants still affect many people in really bad ways. Even though all the carcinogens are supposed to have been removed from today's products, I think we can all agree that it's simply not true in all cases. It sounds to me as though the skin pores are becoming clogged with something and that something is most likely the deodorant you're using. Get yourself to a different doctor and by all means, don't stop until you get some help. No young woman should have to deal with this. Just my opinion, but I have a firm basis for it. Good Luck to you.
Regardless of which trash can it comes out of, when it goes into a garbage or rubbish truck, it ends up in the same place...our city and county dumps or landfills. One day, those are all going to be filled up and we'll have to do something else. If we all started right now, and did our best to recycle and reuse anything that might end up in one of those ever-smaller growing spots, we could all learn something and teach it to our children at the same time. Ultimately, it's going to be the future generations who will have the most trouble dealing with lack of space in all areas.
I see nothing at all wrong with "reclaiming or recycling" anything that's found in the cemetary trash cans or barrels. After all, those items have already served one purpose, and if they can serve another, then so much the better.
One small thing about germs...where would they come from? What would be the difference in using items from a cemetary than it would from your corner neighbor's trash heap? I promise you that the dead pose no problem at all with germs as when they're embalmed or put into sealed caskets or vaults, there is absolutely no danger at all from them. There might be a passing dog, cat or wild animal who would use the ground area, but no more so than any other place you'd be recycling from. I've seen some really nice baskets, wire wreath stands etc going to the garbage dump or landfill which have so much life left in them that it seems a shame not to do something else with them than allow them to go to waste. I rather doubt that the cemetary admin would object to anyone helping them by taking some of it. You can always ask if you think you should. As another reader mentioned, this applies only to those items placed in the trash bins by cemetary personnel or family and friends who are cleaning up the gravesites. No one should even consider "robbing a grave"...not that it would actually hurt anyone really, but simply because it's not nice. Our family has had so many things stollen or removed from our loved ones' resting places that we have become very careful what we put there now.
You know that all of us only do these things for ourselves anyway... Our loved ones who have left this earth are in a far better place than any cemetary plot. If you want to really "make them happy as they smile down at us " (maybe...who knows?) then think about how much they meant to you when you were together. Sing a song for them, or recite a beautiful poem. Donate money to one of their favorite charities or buy a book for the local library in their name. If anything still means anything to them regarding this earth at all, then so will those things. Just my opinion. I apologize for being so long, but this is a favorite subject for me. (subject? soapbox?) One or the other for sure.
We also live in south Florida and this tip has probably saved our lives as we've been doing it for years now. I have some of the "less expensive" bath towels which are quite thin. Wetting them in ice water and wrapping them around the neck keeps the blood flowing to the brain a lot cooler and may even stop a person from having a heat stroke or suffering from heat exhaustion. If your car's air-conditioning goes bye-bye, it'll make a long trip so much more comfortable to have that nice cool towel to wrap around your neck, wipe your face and generally keep you refreshed. We found that out this very summer.
A walk on the beach can be made even better if you have a cool wet towel around your neck. If it warms up, just shake it in the air for a few flips, and it'll cool off again enough to keep you happy.
Isn't this list just the greatest for sharing everything. I read every word of mine every day, and have learned so much.
Gert is a beautiful kitty girl. I know she brings you many hours of perfect peace and pleasure caring for her. We love all animals, but there is something about a kitty that steals your heart like no other can. We have one but we live with our son who has 5, so it's quite a houseful of fun just watching them play, sleep and wake up to play again. Thank you for sharing Gert with us.
Webster is a sweetheart, I can tell. We too have a ginger kitty (Tee-Vo), who looks identical to your Webster. They are just the most wonderful pets (masters in disguise) and rule us so gently and lovingly that we are forever hooked. Thanks for sharing him with us. Incidently, we are slaves to seven kitties (all rescued and strictly indoor residents). They keep us in line and on our toes for sure and are just the greatest entertainment, and most loving housemates.
Also want to say I enjoyed Mike's reply and delightful little story about his two "monsters". It's so nice to find other cat people to speak with. Best to all cat lovers. Julia ... View related article.
We have 3 Grand Kitties all female, all tortoise babies and they are not quite as dark as your Angel, but they are such sweet tempered girls that we love them dearly. All together, our son and his wife have 6 kitties, all rescued from animal shelters, and surprisingly, they all love one another and they love our one cat who travels everywhere with us. You'd think they were all litter-mates, but no too are related except by the love they have for one another. We are definitely "cat people" and are blessed to have them in our lives. Thank you for sharing your Angel with us.
