RE: Craft Project: Can Lid Chimes
Oh my gosh, that is SO cute! The beads really add style to the whole thing. Now I have to buy some frozen juice to get started. ... View related article.

RE: The Can Opener
I used to have a Pampered Chef can opener. Even though it was just a black plastic and metal thing-a-ma-bob, it gave me a warm fuzzy feeling every time I used it. But it's been MIA for several years now. I bought a cheap off-brand to replace it, but it's just not the same. Your post brings a tear to my eye, making me long for the way things used to be. Heh heh, kidding, but only about the tear. Everything else is true. Your story was a hoot to read. ... View related article.

RE: Budget Kitchen Remodel
Thank you for all the positive feedback. Notice I didn't include a picture of the fridge. That side of the room had some major issues. There was a floor to ceiling shelf next to the fridge, which I've hated it since the day I moved here. I tore that down and my BIL built me a new one. I still need to paint it and order doors for it. Then I'll be done. My next room will be the great room and adjoining hall, but I'm only slapping on a coat of paint. I don't think I'll be ready to tackle such a big project for a long, long time. ... View related article.

RE: Moving Handles on Cabinets
You can buy wood filler or caulk to fill the hole. Some of the bigger hardware stores, like a Menards or Lowe's, sell the stuff in different colors and wood tones. You might discover what matches best through trial and error.

Try filling the hole on one cabinet. Wait for it to dry. If needed, use a swab and dab on a drop of shiny varnish over the plugged hole so it blends in with the rest of the shiny cabinets.

If it looks okay then you can fill them on all the cabinets and drill new holes for the new knobs. Good luck.

RE: Color Advice for a Tile Backsplash
It's hard to tell without a picture. If the room is small, go with whatever matches your upper cabinet color (you can't go wrong with a traditional white). It will open up the room and give it a simple, clean look, if you stick with shades of white. You have to be careful, especially with black appliances. While black and white go well together, but if you add too many contrasting colors, this will make the room feel busy.

If white and black is too boring for your tastes, there's ways to rev it up.

*instead of going with traditional squares, go with diamond or subway shape
*Maybe create a line of contrasting color through the white . . . in my opinion, thinner is better.

*Or alternate white with cream-colored tiles, creating a pattern
*Or stick with the same white color and simply add interest with a molded tile design.
*Then there's tons of natural tile with variation of colors built into each piece. Maybe a basic white with hints of honey.

I just repainted my own cabinets and redid my back splash. I used bisque-colored subway tile because they matched my cabinets. I like the effect. ... View related article.

RE: Cleaning Formica Countertop Before Painting
Hi Maryanne:

I just created a blog through this website all about my experiences remodeling my kitchen. I painted my counter tops to look like galaxy granite and talk about some of the troubles I ran into while doing it, which might be of benefit to you. I'm not sure if my blog is working correctly or if anybody has taken a look at it, but I'd love it if they did.

Like grammakin suggested, I used TSP to clean my counters and in my blog I talk about some of the other steps involved.

Good luck with your counters. ... View related article.

RE: Teenage Girl Cries A Lot
It could just be hormones, but if this a relatively new development, maybe not. Sometimes, when a person cries over a lot of little things, it's because there's a much bigger thing she's trying to deal with right now. She might feel like there's an issue out of her control, so crying over the little things is a safe form of release without having to acknowledge the true problem.
