| RE: Using Paint To Making A Room Appear Larger |
Hi Carol-- I'm not sure about the optical illusion reasoning-- especially the one about making a rectangle room look square! To me, a rectangle room will always be a rectangle no matter how it's painted! :)
I do know, however, that painting horizontal stripes in graduating sizes and colors with white breaks in it will make a room appear taller.... for instance, paint from the bottom to about chair rail height a dark gray, then a 2 inch strip of white, then up about 2 feet or so a medium gray, followed by a 2 inch strip of white again and then top with a about a 1 foot strip of the lightest gray on top. I did this with yellows in my bathroom-- and it really does make the room seem larger. Each chunk of color graduates in size and shade as it leads up the wall.
Also, if you have any windows in the room, hang your curtains from a rod at ceiling level. This also gives the illusion of a larger window and ceilings.
Good luck! I hope someone has an answer as to why these things work this way! ... View related article. |

| RE: Inexpensive Basement Finishing |
I like Maggie's ideas. Another idea could be to start hanging your children's artwork to build the "walls", depending on how old they are.
If you have cement block exposed, you could prime and paint that as well. We made a toy room in our old house and I painted the cement wall bright sunflower yellow to brighten it up down there. I hung large childrens posters all over-- trying to mask the darkness down there. You could even get some posters from a movie store and do a Hollywood Box Office game room theme.
I also hung Xmas lights in the open trusses of the ceiling.... just to be whimsical and draw away from the ductwork and framework. You could do regular ones or you could pick up some of the "garden" ones that you see that are more decorative.
You can get large 8x5 flat industrial rugs at Walmart for about $20- they aren't soft but a little warmer than cement on bare toes!
Good luck! I'm curious to see what others come up with since our current basement is also unfinished. ... View related article. |

| RE: Hardware to Hang Wooden Curtain Rods |
Hi- You could get some nice wall sconces. I picked up a pair in the window treatment section of Walmart-- they are plaster scrolly looking things with a hole through the center so that you can fit the rod through it. I'm sure they had wood ones, too. Good luck! Michele ... View related article. |
