RE: Make Light Curtains Darker
Megan, Are they curtains or drapes? If they are the thinner smaller curtain, they may dye alright, but I would think twice about dying drapes, as they are so large and made of stuff that might not take dye well. But I have bought cheap shower curtains to put on the back of drapes to keep the heat and cold out. You could do that with a very dark shower curtain, most of the time they can be found at the $ store. You will need 2, one for each panel. I smoothed the drapes faced down, on the floor and layed the shower curtain on top and lined them up at the header on top, then just wiped stiched the headers together, tucking it into the pleates some. Then I whip stich them down both sides but leave the bottom free. This will help to darken the room when the drapes are pulled, which is all that you might need. I do this to drapes I buy second hand that are in good shape, but are not insulated, it really helps to keep the heat out in the summer and the cold in the winter. I use clear shower curtains if we need more light in a dark room and darker ones in we need the room to be darker. Of course if you just want to change the color of the curtains, this won't help much. good luck ... View related article.

RE: Water Saving Tips
Sorry about this "when I was a Kid" story, but here goes. One of my fondest memories of my childhood was staying at my Grandmothers farm every summer. Monday-washday was the most fun. Gramma had a ringer washer and no hot water or bathoom in the house either. I got to help, first by chopping wood for the woodburning stove, Gramma pumped all the well water and poured it in her big boiler type pot. She only used HOT water in the ringer washer, the rinse water was cold, and it was in another tub like a ringer washer but without the wringer thingy attached. I won't go in to the rest of washing except to say that was all the water she used to wash a weeks worth of clothes. She always started with the whites and the worked her way down to the darkests and dirties, the blue jeans and work socks were last. After done washing she laided the washer hose out the porch door and the water ran in a groove alongside the house to the back yard where the garden was. It was our kids job to keep the water going down each row so that all the rows in the garden got water. We loved playing in the mud, digging trenches for the water to flow down the row and when it got to the end we had to dam it up and send it down the next row. Gramma never let the water out till all the clothes were hung on the line, as we helped with that, too. Everyone thought the food from her garden was the best, it didn't have bugs as the soap in the GRAY WATER discourage bugs. So Gramma saved water 2 ways, didn't use as much to wash the clothes and then water the garden with the very same water. Oh yes her clothes were very clean. It has been proven that the automic washer was the first thing to cause miss use and water waste. I am only 57, but did live in rural Montana. Now I have a water saving washer, but in dry hot times I will catch the water from it and use it to water our trees and flower plants out side. ... View related article.

RE: Using Polar Fleece for Curtains
That is a good idea. I went a cheaper way a few years back. I bought 2 clear shower curtaints and hooked them on the back of the drapes using the drapery hook already there. It did make a very big difference, and still let in some light. This was in a downstairs room and the drapes were made with a light weight open weave fabric because we wanted more light in the room. It worked so well I hand stiched them to the back of the drape to make it easier to laundry. I'm sure if you used the fleece and the clear shower curtian one would real save. The shower curtians were less than $2. each, so it is a good way to keep out the drafts in like college dorms, or rentals. trashcrafter in Washington state ... View related article.

RE: Nylon Stuffed Pillow
Shauna, I think hosery makes the best pillow stuffing, I cut mine in loops to make it stay loffty.
I like to cut the stiched on waist band, off of panty hose, keep it in a loop, to use as a great big rubber band! Works great for putting around fabric, when you are working with yards of it. Use when ever you need a great big rubber band. Try it, it's free!! from Washington state ... View related article.

RE: Question About Jeans Quilts
I have seen a very good looking jean quilt backed with the big red and blue mens hankies, the country kind. The blocks on the front were framed with strips of the same . The back was made with the 2 colors in a checkerboard patteren. I do not know if there was anything in between the two. Just a thought. ... View related article.

RE: No More... Getting Lost in the Pattern
Thats a GREAT IDEA. some patterens are so involved, and most of use don't sit down and start and end the project just like that. So if you leave and come back or answer the phone, have a live out side of crafts, its very easy to get mixed up, for lots of us, and then have to undo several rows is such a waste of time. When ever I travel and take my crochet, I photo copy the pattern, also enlarge the type, so its right there when I need it and don't have to get out my reading glasses to try and read it. By the time I'm done the copy is beat so I just trash it as I have the real copy at home in my files. Oh yeah, the black print on the copy comes off easy, so don't get it on your project, I find folding the type in on itself before sliding it in the bag, is about all thats needed to keep it off the print off your work! ... RE: Greywater Systems
Hi Ron, Your tips on graywater took me back in time! I'm 57 and as a little girl in Montana some of my best fun was had on Gramma's farm on Mondays, WASH day. After all the clothes were rung thru the wringer and hung on the line Gramma layed the hose to the machine in its little river bed, already made from years of doing this. and the water ran around to the back of the house to the veggie garden. It was our job to divert the flow to each row as it finished runnig done the end of the row before it. It doesen't rain much in Montana in the summer, so this was the main watering the garden got. The garden did well, and guess what there was not many bugs. Now with todays automic washers it is a wonder there is any water left at all. I'm glad to see that some companys are trying to adress the waste of water in the new washers. I have used my wash water lots of times to water our trees and such. Just can't stand to waste water!! ... View related article.
