| RE: Asian Theme Bedroom |
|
Painting one "focal" wall a darker color is okay as long as you stay in the same color family. When you buy your paint, look at the color sample and choose the darker color from the same color sample card. The colors on these cards are in the same "family" and I would only go one or two shades up or down on the paint sample card. If your room is asian inspired I would look into painting furniture or accessories a glossy black and using bamboo. Good luck on your project. ... View related article. |

| RE: Homemade Gift Ideas for Boys |
I have a 7 yr. old son who loves video games too (these are pricey!!) Here are a few suggestions:
1) maybe you could make a homemade puzzle of a photo of him or his family. Take the photo and have it enlarged. Glue on sturdy card board and then cut shapes with an exacto knife. 7 yr. olds still like seeing pics of themselves and it could be a fun project for him.
2)They are also at a great age for calendars...maybe a homemade photo calendar with birthdays and holidays of his family written in. Lots of pics with him and his family or friends on the calendar pages.
3) A wall clock for his bedroom. If his bedroom has a theme (baseball, basketball, soccer, Yu-Gi=OH, Spongebob...you get the idea). Craft stores sell the clock parts and they are very inexpensive. Just use your imagination to "decorate" the background. I made my son one using Spongebob that I copied in color off the internet then enlarged at a copy center and used as the background. He loves having his own clock hanging on the wall in his room.
Hope these help. ... View related article. |

| RE: Paula's Kitchen |
I think the cabinets should be a lighter color if you plan on having dark countertops. If you really want to paint the cabinets a dark blue or green I would go with a lighter color granite countertop. Perhaps think about priming and painting the knotty pine walls in a light cheerful color as well or at least a beige in the same tones as the wallpaper. Collect color card samples from Home Depot in paint colors that match your wallpaper and also collect granite countertop samples. Before I painted our countertops, I colllected a bunch of samples to study. Put all the color samples together to make sure they are appealing. This will give a more coordinated look to your kitchen. The colors do not have to "match" the wallpaper exactly but need to be in the same color "family" . For example some blues have more purple/reds in them than others. And check out the off white/beiges...notice that some have more browns in them and some are more pinkish. Collecting samples and arrranging them on the kitchen table, holding them up the wallpaper , etc. goes a long way in helping to make a decision about color on walls, cabinets and countertops. The best of luck to you in your project! Marianne ... View related article. |

| RE: Give Store Brands a Try |
|
No offense meant to Walker ...but I have found that store brands are often better or as good as name brand food. Starkist tuna has far more water is and less meatier than the store brand I have been buying. We have been buying store brand items for years and have never found the quality to be in question. Teaching this class, it would seem is a disservice to your attendees...because you teach in a state agency I am presuming the people who attend are on the more low income scale and therefore are buying higher priced foods and paying for the manufacturers' advertising! These especially are the ones who need to make their dollars stretch further! How often have I seen people with food stamp cards purchase expensive grocery items that I wouldn't buy for my own family! I am not putting them down, however , it does make me wonder about the "system". Also makes me wonder about the instructors "research" in this area. Common sense would indicate that name brands are top dollar because the consumer ends up paying for the advertising associated with this product. Many companies like Walmart do not have their own commissaries to produce food products, but rather have the name brand companies re-label the product and sell it for a fraction of the cost. Sorry to ramble on but this guest post really bothered me....it offends me when someone tries to back up their statements by stating there is "research" to support their opinion. ...
