RE: Inexpensive Raised Beds
I love all the things you are doing, Robyn. For me the greatest gardening tip is patience. Trying to grow anything where there is no soil, takes lots of it. That's why the raised beds were a saving grace. Wyn ... View related article.

RE: Homemade Cat Food
About offal. Cats and dogs that have been euthanized are sent to offal processing plants. Also diseased animal pars are included. That is why it is not advisable to feed your cat or dog food based on offal.

Diseases such as mad cow disease have developed through the feeding animals the flesh of their own kind, and through the concentration of disease element that results for the practice.

Prion based diseases occur even in thoroughly cooked stuff that is included in the offal.

I do not recommend using offal for animal feed, nor inadvertently turning your pets into cannibals. ... View related article.

RE: Looking At Everyday Household Energy Usage
Good reminders, LAH. Some folks do not like the look of the light coming off CFL's. They might prefer the "full spectrum" CFL bulbs! Wyncia ... View related article.

RE: Laundry Table Top
Great idea, looks fine. I cannot find the top of my machines under the clutter, sad to say. We have a newer model washer and an old seldom used drier (kids are, who did their own laundry, are grown and moved out). a new topper would force me to clean up! Wyncia ... View related article.

RE: Gardening: Wood Shavings in the Garden
I know that pine shavings will rob the soil of nitrogen, though the saw dust is awfully inviting to add to the compost ile. Also avoid treated wood for edible crops. Arsenic and old lace...remember the story? ... View related article.

RE: Use an Indoor Clothes Line
My mother dried the clothes in the basement in the winter and out doors in the warm weather. Now I live in sunny Colorado. We have an area intended for passive solar heating of the house. The narrow cathedral ceiling reached above where it can be seen from the living space. We build a small balcony off the master bedroom with a clothes line. They hang in this warm area, un seen from the dining room below! ... View related article.

RE: Use Ceiling Fan Year Round to Save on Heating
I believe the debate is still open on when a ceiling fan saves energy. If it increases comfort when run at low speed with the thermostat set lower in winter, or higher in summer, then it may be a saver. But remember, electricity is typically the most expensive form of energy we use n our homes, so it is not a good substitute for the use of heat from natural gas.
