RE: Candied Walnut Recipe
I have used Indianlady's recipe several times and is very good. I want to try the recipe Postaldoris posted. It looks a little easier and sounds delicious. ... View related article.

RE: Finding Pyrex Custard Cups
I found some at a local Kitchen & Co. store in the past few months. They were thicker than my older ones, but the same size. Maybe you have a Kitchen & Co. store near you. They are so handy. I couldn't live without them. ... View related article.

RE: Managing Time as a Working Woman
These are great ideas. Now that we are retired, my husband does the cooking five nights a week (I cook 2 nights) and does the grocery shopping, puts the dishes up out of the dishwasher, does the vacuuming and mows the yard. We both garden. I clean the house, do the laundry, ironing, pay the bills. We take turns taking out the trash.

One of our best timesavers is to make menus for a week or two, then repeat. This reduces the time to make menus. Have one meal of leftover veggies each week and possibly eat out or order take-out to cut down on your time cooking dinner.

Another timesaver I did when I worked was to make a list of what clothes I would wear for a week at a time. Then I did not need to fret about what to wear each morning. I referred to the list and I was set for the day. That saved at least 5-10 minutes each morning, but only took about 5 minutes once a week to write it down. Then after 4 weeks of outfits, I repeated from Week 1.

As many other posts have mentioned, you and your life will be much less stressful if you and your husband can share duties. I have the motto that we eat out of clean dishes, wear clean clothes and sleep in clean beds, but you can write your name in the dust on any of the furniture. This means the important things get done, but leaves time for fun, creative and entertaining times to do something for you either alone or with your husband.

Life is good and will get better. I agree that married life is much different than living alone. Don't fret about everything being in its place. Enjoy your new married life and I hope some of the good tips here will help you get your husband involved to make a good team. Best of luck to you. ... View related article.

RE: Sharpening A Rotary Cutter
Patom's answer reminded me of what my granny always told us. She had special scissors for cloth and others for paper, etc. She made sure we never used her "good" scissors for paper or anything except cutting cloth.

To keep paper punches and scissors sharp, I have read to cut through aluminum foil. I have no idea whether this would help sharpen rotary blades, but you might give it a try. ... View related article.

RE: Freezing Hot Dogs
I separate many items to flash freeze them before I freeze them in large bags, like pork chops, beef cubes, chicken breasts, thighs, bacon, etc., but never thought of separating hot dogs. Thanks for a great idea. I'll do that next time. ... View related article.

RE: Gardening With Children
I plant tomatoes in pots and enjoy them. They flower then have little green tomatoes for a long time before they turn red and are ready to eat. For a child tomatoes may require too much time to reap the reward which can be around July 4th or later depending on the variety. We use a tomato cage to support the heavy branches. I love the taste of home-grown tomatoes so much. I grow one plant of grape tomatoes and one of larger tomatoes for slicing. The funny thing is DH doesn't like fresh tomatoes, so I give the overabundance to neighbors.

Last year growing tomatoes upside down was very popular. I think this site had instructions to make those in a DIY project. If you have a place to hang them, you might search for those.

Have fun and good luck with whatever you plant. ... View related article.

RE: Use Rags Instead of Paper Towels
The rags are a great idea. I had an old sheet that I cut into small rags (about 12 x 15 inches). I folded them and put them in a little basket on the counter near the paper towels. I told DH that everytime he would get a paper towel to grab a rag. I do the same. I wash them when I do the towels. We also have used cloth napkins for several years. We use paper towels on really yucky messes but have reduced our paper towel use by probably 95%. Good for the budget and good for the environment. ... View related article.

RE: Use Your Potato Ricer to Remove Moisture from Spinach
A few years ago I saw a food show host use a green kitchen towel. You don't have to worry about it staining the towel. I don't have a green towel but I use a dark towel to get the spinach really dry. ... View related article.

RE: Finding Donations for the Troops
I'm sorry I don't know companies that can help. I make greeting cards and send them to soldiers in Iraq. Soldiers can sign up on AnySoldier.com and then Americans or anyone can get the address and see what they need. Soldiers love to get cards or anything people want to send. I don't personally know any soldiers serving now, but I get names of people from my state or with my last name or my maiden name. One time I saw this person who had the same name as my father and sent him a letter. They usually respond if they have time. Usually the person listed is in charge of the packages, etc. received and passes them on to soldiers who don't receive much mail. The entries the soldiers make on anysoldier.com are very interesting to read. Postage for letters is the same as mailing anywhere in the USA.

So you could make soldiers either over there now or going over aware of the anysoldier.com site and they might receive more attention. Sometimes schools, churches, companies or community groups will pick a group of soldiers to support.

Good luck with your efforts. God bless our soldiers everywhere. ... View related article.
