RE: Job Ideas for an Outgoing Person
Check out a local community college.
Go to their learning office or whatever and speak to a career counselor. Then your son can express his skills and his desires and the counselor can give tons of good information. This is usually a free service.
In my area the community college offers career exploration classes which are free or cheap. For example they'd have a one-day 2 hour class all about the medical/health programs they offer. You might also try taking an adult education class in a field (i.e., take computer hardware repair to see if you might like to become a computer technician.) It's fairly cheap ($80-$100?) for a trial run.

RE: Do I Remove the Fish When Siphoning Tank?
Are you doing a regular cleaning or are you sterilizing the tank?
For a regular cleaning and removing say 50% of the water, leave the fish in the tank. When you're done, add dechlorinated water back to the tank. The fish will be happy and it will be MUCH LESS stressful for them.
If you intend to sterizlize the tank, the short answer is don't. :-) Good bacteria develops in the gravel and ornaments which you don't want to lose.

Could it be a health problem? Sometimes when a pet changes her usual behavior it might mean she needs to see the vet. I know that dachsies can get backaches easily for example.

RE: German Girl Coming To Canada
A german girl will know a fair bit of English so you'll be able to stumble along.
Culture is simply the way we do things -- what we eat, how we greet each other, who we give presents to, how we celebrate Christmas. For example we don't eat rice and fish for breakfast like some cultures do. Your German friend is from a different culture and it helps if you both can understand that.
You might want to familiarize yourself with culture shock (or a better term is "culture stress") which your German friend will likely experience. Culture shock happens when there are so many differences in the host country that you don't know how to deal with them. (from http://www.uwec.edu/counsel/pubs/shock.htm). Culture stress happens in stages and one does get through them. If you're aware of how people cope when they are in a different culture, it will help your relationship with her.
Check out the website above or google "culture shock." You'll be glad you did.

RE: Algae on a Acrylic Fish Tank
Ok... maybe here are some ideas to think about. First off, yes you can get your algae under control and it won't take too much effort or money. There are supplies that won't scratch acrylic tanks.
Here is a website that sells pet supplies. They have excellent articles about common pet problems including algae in fish tanks. Obviously they want to sell products but it will give you ideas on what to look for locally or even to buy on ebay if you want to go that route. The website is www.drsfostersmith.com. Here are the algae control articles on their site: http://tinyurl.com/df6rv
It is important to figure out *why* you have an algae bloom too so you can prevent it in the future so do read the articles above too. It might just be extra sunlight on your tank and all you need to do is close the shade.

RE: Cooking for One
For freezing and storing foods, I bought a bunch of those plastic disposable gladware containers (e.g., 20 containers), all the same size. Then it's easy to store food and it's easy to store the washed containers.
For food I usually buy the convenience products such as boxed dinners, rice-a-roni, noodle mixes, soup/stew in a can, precooked chicken patties, frozen stirfry bags, frozen waffles, sandwich from the grocery store deli, individual canned fruit packs. For a family convenience foods are much too expensive. As one person, I find that I have to throw out a lot of food if I do fresh or scratch cooking. For example, the fresh brocolli dies before I get it all consumed. So does the pancake mix. I've opened a can of pineapple put it in the fridge and then forgot it for 3 weeks so had to throw it out. If I do convenience foods, then I have enough variety so I don't get bored. Nutritionally fresh is better, granted, but a frozen stirfry bag is better nutrition than a frozen pizza.
I also have some quickie food things which are decent in nutrition and taste -- like I'll eat breakfast cereal and toast or pancakes for supper sometimes when I don't feel like making anything. Breakfast food is usually a faster prep than regular supper foods. I also always have a few boxes of microwave frozen dinners for that reason. Those are fairly nutritious and they are good for when you just don't want to cook at all.
I always store my bread in the freezer. Then it stays fresh enough until I finish the loaf.

RE: Should I Declare Bankruptcy?
If you think you need to declare bankruptcy, do it NOW! The laws are changing (fall 2005?) so that it will be much much more difficult to declare bankruptcy in the future.
You have my deepest empathy. I remember hearing that the greatest percentage of bankruptcies were for medical bills. I know you'll make the right decision.
