Retired and just loving being the grandma and the one in the family with time to spend on the net looking at the world, sending things along to my four daughters. This is much better than directly sharing my own wisdom which can be seen as interference, and they can always just delete what they don't want without hurting my feelings a bit.
Spending time volunteering around town doing things that I used to be paid for. Needing new kinds of tips for frugal life, since much of what I learned along the way is not good for single living or for second stage of life with limited budget, less inclination to run around and all the time I ever dreamed of having to do whatever comes to mind.
Love this site and love this life.
PS. The picture is of my youngest grandchild, Sequoia.
FOUND THIS YESTERDAY AFTER I HAD ALREADY BEEN HERE:
If you're using Internet Explorer (5.0 or higher), just go to Tools, Internet Options and choose the Content tab. Then click on the AutoComplete button. This will bring up a control panel where you can turn AutoComplete on or off for Web addresses, forms or passwords. THREE SEPARATE CHECK BOXES.
Just uncheck the choices that say "Web addresses" and "forms" to keep previous search engine entries and visited Web site addresses from coming up as you type in new searches.
In Firefox, go to Tools, Options and choose the Advanced icon. Under Accessibility, make sure the choice that says "Begin finding when you begin typing" is unchecked. ... View related article.
Worth a try. I had a child born at 6 1/2 months (my baby who is now 36) with allergies to cows milk, wheat, eggs, chicken and dozens of other things. She lived on soy products, rice and lamb til she was 8, and by then outgrew the problems and is now a healthy mom herself. ... View related article.
I have used all these methods, but not in this combination and THANK YOU for the ideas. Just getting ready to do a couple of loads of white that have been waiting too long, and I know I will be happier than the usual laundry days!
For stains that don't come out and can't be laundered so thoroughly, I still use lemon juice and sunshine as in the old days. Sometimes requires several tries, so only use on valued items, but did you ever wonder how people in the olden days managed to keep things white? Lemon juice and baking soda and sunshine were my great grandmother's tools for her valued lace table cloths and antimacassars. I started using the same on white shirt collars and coffee stains on front of white blouses and it still works. ... View related article.
AMEN ON CHEAPER! And usually healthier too since many of the growers at farmers markets use older techniques that use natural fertilizers and less herbicides. Many of our local producers at the market are using heirloom seeds for many fruits and veggies, and they taste sooooooo much better. ... View related article.
Congratulations! I did this a few years back, and then collected a whole new set of books, missing many that I had given away, and struggling to replace old favorites while adding more modern collections like microwave and crockpot recipes. Had to move the entire collection to a bookshelf just outside the kitchen door.
Then I found the web!! Can get all recipes I want from there. Have also created a printable set of recipes that I use frequently (probably don't really need them to cook, but get requests from friends and family.
That big fat notebook full of recipes (from 45 years ago when I was a young bride to the time when I gave away all the seldom cook books about 15 years ago) is like a wonderful scrapbook, so it sits next to wedding pictures, the photo albums of each child, and the yearbooks from highschool that I somehow managed to keep. The recipes are as treasured as other old memories.
There is something about them that satisfies me. When my mom died, my Dad asked what I personal things I wanted to keep and I immediately asked for her 1936 Joy of Cooking and her old Fannie Farmer book, which she received as wedding gifts. Funny thing was that he said yes, but he needed to keep them to learn how to cook for himself.
Of couse now that I have retired and my family has all gone elsewhere, I look at the shelf and want my space back. Cooking for one does not require many cook books!!! ... View related article.
There are also Auto- Complete check boxes on several programs, Internet Explorer among them, that you can un check to stop this, also can clear if it is the drop down list at the address bar that is bothering you.
There are also Auto-Fill and Auto-Complete preferences in the Google tool bar if you are using that. Probably there in Yahoo and AOL tool bars if you are using those.
Most newer word processing programs have the same Auto-Complete feature that can be turned off.
I have been in life situations where I had only time, and the stuff on hand, no money and no way to get anywhere to spend it if I had it. So knowing these things can be very useful in a pinch. If you have no cash and a kid who needs to glue something for an important school project, it is more than just novel usefulness, it is a life saver. ... View related article.
If you forgot to start it , don't have a pressure cooker, and need it soon as possible, best bet is to cut it into small serving size pieces and braise it with plenty of liquid and something acidic to tenderize it. I also use a small sharp knife to stab the meat and insert garlic slivers. Not only does this flavor the meat, the stabs allow faster cooking inside the meat, which also speeds up the cooking. ...
