Profile For PupperMom - About Me

Semi-retired wife, mother, Grandma ( and PupperMom).  Certified sucker for animals, have been a freelance writer since the early 70's and also do a lot of garage/estate sale roaming and sell quirky ( mainly retro) pottery and such on eBay. ( Check out nj2fla02 there--please!  Hannah's chew toy fund, LOL!)

The pupper in the pic is our spoiled Belgian Malinois, Hannah --my best buddy.

RE: Having a Costume Birthday Party Other Than at Halloween
Sure, why can't you have your party the way you want it? It's your birthday! You could even do a Mardi Gras theme if you don't want to re-do Hallowe'en ( or make it a Halloween II party. You can snag leftover Hallowe'en decorations for really cheap at all the stores now). ... View related article.

RE: Determining the Value of Collectibles for Estate Sale
Agree with the poster who mentioned Kovels as a good research source; the problem with Ruby Lane is that you're getting generally higher retail markup figures. In other words, you'll find a lot of items with bloated pricing. If you research through eBay, keep in mind that generally, things will sell on eBay for only about 33% of what they'd go for in a brick-and-mortar store.

Also resellers, eBayers and antique dealers usually flock to these estate sales looking for a deal; you don't want to overprice--but you certainly don't want to under price, either.

Google, Google, Google. It may be a pain if time is at a premium for you, but researching as much as you can in as many places online as you can will work in your favor.

Example: you have a doodad that your neighbor says looks very valuable; you search it and see it selling in various places for $50, $100, $45, $80. Average it out and price it just a couple of dollars over to take "haggling" into consideration.

The average price for the imaginary item above is $68.75. I'd price it for $80 and take $70 for it if someone wants to haggle. Hope this helps a little. ... View related article.

RE: Watch PayPal For Fraudulent Charges
Also have had a PayPal account for years here with no problems; OP, sounds like somehow, someone compromised your checking account information and then began hitting those "dating sites" and that's how you got those charges--either through phishing, or other means.

I had a friend with a checking account problem a couple of years back--sounds similar to yours but no PayPal involvement at all. In that case, it turned out that one of her teenagers got hold of her bank info and was calling phone dating lines. Just a thought. ... View related article.

RE: Rehydrating Beans in Hard Water
You may have a little luck covering them with very cold water about 1" higher than the beans, then bringing them to a rolling boil and keeping them at a consistent boil for about 25 minutes. This replaces the overnight soak if you're making any kind of bean or split pea soup, too. ... View related article.

RE: This Year, Recycle Christmas
This is such a good, good idea, and it really throws back to what the spirit of Christmas is supposed to be about: not a race to see who can give the gift with the most bling ( or gobble up the most presents), but to give with the heart and give back to the community at the same time.

A lot of people will embrace this because they've been hard hit by the state of the economy--I hope that when the economy finally recovers we can all look at Christmas the way the OP has and continue to set aside the insanity of commercialization at Christmas for simpler ( and way more meaningful) giving. Merry Christmas! ... View related article.

RE: Dog Has Soft Stool With Mucus
What a pretty pup! I don't really think that impacted anal glands are going to create mucousy stools--though scooting the butt can be a symptom of that. I'd take a stool sample--and the dog--to the vet ASAP; sounds like a parasite. ... View related article.

RE: What Breed is My Dog?
I think you're right on it with the GSD/ Golden Retriever. We had a rescue boy a while back ( crossed the Rainbow Bridge a few years ago) who looked a lot like her. The giveaway being the fuzzies on those cute little ears for the Retriever part of her; also the form of her snout, and the markings and body build are definitely Shepherd.

She's going to be a big one. I'll bet around 75 pounds full-grown. If her temperament is anything like our old Max was. She'll be smart and a sweetheart. Hugs to that pup! ... View related article.
