Profile For Harlean from Arkansas - Guess it's Time!
Hi Everyone!
I have been a member of Thrifty Fun for quite some time, and just realized that I had never done a profile. I am sure many of you know me by my posts, feedback, and my craft patterns.
Now, as commentator Paul Harvey would say, "The Rest of the Story"
I am 69 years old and have been married to the same husband, Paul, for 48 years. We have 3 grown children, and lots of Grandkids and Great-Grandkids.
We enjoy fishing, singing and playing Gospel, Bluegrass, and Classic Country Music. My husband plays the Harmonica, and, I didn't think I had a musical bone in my body, but am now playing a drum, and singing.
Wealso have been craft vendors for about 40 years. Our crafts have been varied over the years, but for the past 5 years we have been creating wooden Yard Art. My website, as listed above, is a work in progress, and has just been published, The little free site that I have had in the past has just disappeared from the internet. You can see a couple examples in the Thrifty Fun archives.
I also enjoy cooking, gardening and crochet and knitting. I like to read, too, but outside of reading newsletters on the internet, my book reading is about limited to waiting time at the doctor's office, and that is very limited. It seems like there is never a dull moment in our lives and no time for boredom. And never enough hours in a day to do all the things we would like to do.
The way I made them many years ago for my kids was to lay their hand on the waistband of an old sweater. In fact, I bought the sweaters in thrift shops to save money. Place their wrist on the waist band, and use that as the cuff of the mitten. With chalk or marker, draw a line around the thumb and then the fingers, starting at the edge of the sweater where the wrist is positioned. Pin both thicknesses of the sweater together just inside the line. Then sew with the sewing machine using a fairly small stitch, on the line. After sewing, cut the mitten outside the stitching. Turn seam to inside if you like. Harlean from Arkansas ... View related article.
These flowers are not weeds...actually they are Wildflowers. They are called Blackeyed Susans, and I do not know the botanical name, but they grow in great profusion in Arkansas, and many other states as well. Harlean from Arkansas ... View related article.
Neosporin is safe to use, and another product that works extemely well on humans as well as pets is Bag Balm. It was created many years ago to keep the udders soft and smooth on milk cows. But I keep it on hand for cuts, chapped hands, human or animals. You can buy it at Farm Stores. Harlean from Arkansas ... View related article.
No children in our household, but we try to eat healthy. When I shop for cereal, I check the nutrition label, and avoid cereals with more than 5 grams sugar per serving, and check the fiber content...the higher the better. Cheerios is whole grain with low sugar and good fiber. Avoid Cornflakes...not too good nutritionally. I have read that "converted"white rice is almost as healthy as brown rice. I use it in some of my recipes. It is also labeled parboiled sometimes. I keep fresh apple slices in a ziplock bag for snacking. Grapes are good for healthy snacks to replace chips. And grapes can be frozen. Make sure they are dry after washing, and freeze them on a cookie sheet, then pour them into ziplock bags. Eat straight from the freezer. Just pour out what you need. I stock up on them when they are on sale. Harlean from Arkansas ... View related article.
Do you remember if the numbers were 1 through 15? This sounds like an old card game we used to play when my kids were youngsters about 30 years ago. I still have the cards and the name of the game is rook. Harlean from Arkansas ... View related article.
I have the same problem, but have found a work-around remedy. Just turn them upside down over a colander and run a little water over the bottom of the tray. They will fall right out into the colander. Harlean from Arkansas ... View related article.

I freeze mashed potatoes all the time with great results. Just use sandwich size Ziplocks, and put a cup or so in the bag, press the potatoes to flatten the package, and push them into all the corners to eliminate as much air in the bag as possible. Zip it and stack them in the freezer. To serve, thaw them in the bag, then put them in a microwavable bowl, and heat in the microwave. When hot, stir well with a fork to refresh them. If they are a little dry, stir in a bit of milk and butter. They are as good as fresh done in this manner. This is a good way to store potatoes if they begin to sprout before you can use them up. If you use system restore, make sure you clean the virus from your system first, or you will carry the virus to the restored operating system.Another free antivirus that works very well is Avast. You could install Avast, and do a complete scan. It should find the virus and give you instructions on how to quarantine it. I have used Avast for 3 years, and it has saved me from many emails that were infected with a virus. Harlean from Arkansas ... View related article.
My answer would also be trumpet vine, or as my mother calls it, hummingbird vine. This is a pretty plant, but be careful on choosing a location as it is very invasive. I planted one in a bad spot, and had to dig it up and move it about 4 years ago, and I still pull new growth in the old spot every spring. Harlean from Arkansas ... View related article.
