Cooking From Scratch

To be healthy and wealthy never even finish reading a recipe that lists a "box" or "package" of anything. Be a basic cook. Learn the recipes for meat, rice, and vegetable combinations that don't rely on high salt "packaged" soup mixes for their flavor. Give natural flavors a chance. You may find you like them better than the hyped-up boxes and packages you find in "the middle" of your supermarket.

AMEN, Nancy!!! When I married, my husband seemed so PICKY about my relying on "Helper" packages/boxes, and it took me YEARS to finally agree with him, but he was SO-o-o-o-o RIGHT. ALL of my life my mom had "smoothered" and "slathered" my foods with every possible thing
from the shelves/advertisements/"new" recipes by food mfrs. trying to increase their profits, even to the detrement of human health!! (She meant well in trying to present "new" dishes). Once I submitted

to his requests to just let the food be "natural", it was the difference between black and white for me.
It was a SHOCK to see what each food tasted like.
He used a little lemon ju. on salads, a tiny amount
of jelly in peanut butter sandwiches(I'd been taught
as a young girl to "drown" the taste of peanut butter with jelly).

I became overweight at a very early age
and realized too late that this contributed to it and health issues I had to recover from. The high SALT and even the MSG (monosodium glutamate)in such "helpers" caused severe headaches, possibly contributing to my severe ongoing chronic Migraines even to the present, and to all sorts of vascular/blood disorders I had to overcome, by the grace of God, and better choices

in food/drink.

People perish from lack of knowledge too often. Often the contents of "helper" packages are so full of things that are not only unhealthy but inferior in quality and added as "fillers" to boost the mfgrs profits !

We just can't improve upon what God planned for His Creation to eat/drink! We must reason, be reasonable, and come to the knowledge of the truth of a matter in order to be set free from our wrong beliefs, even if passed on from previous generations. It was a GREAT blessing to resist the
temptation to purchase all that junk, which might
please the taste buds, get rave reviews, and entertain the eyes, but which can slow our body down and even KILL us with all sorts of disorders and lowered resistance.

Medical doctors everywhere are now starting to listen to their conscience and speak out about these things, previously remaining silent since our ignorance too often paid their salaries/fees/vacations, etc., but who know of the validity in what SOME alternative medicine, and background information is being poured out to the public, exposing the outright LIES and greed involved.

It is the opinion/goal of alternative information to inform us of how this society got so "off track" and how to get back "on track" to better physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health through truths/logic/proofs.

Many sites, such as Dr. Mercola.com, offer understandable technical advice about why we should change our wrong beliefs in order to improve ourselves. Many of these doctors offer MUCH better alternatives than prescriptive medicines. I was slow
to accept them but have come to understand that
MUCH of what they are telling us is so very true.

God bless you for this truth!

Here! Here!! Great big cheers for natural cooking. My dh will not eat anything with preservatives. I cook everything from scratch. He has learned to cook as well and we make some fab meals.

I too click off the recipe as soon as I see the ingredient listed that is a prepackaged food.

People it is easy to cook. I even make my own rice a roni type dish and it comes out excellent.

keep on cooking and enjoy!

A sure "delete" for me is cream of anything soup, salty, glutenous and disgusting! If some soup-containing recipe seems like a must-try, which is very rare, I use a MYO mixture I got on this site years ago:
www.thriftyfun.com/tf31678626.tip.html
It's a little more trouble than just opening a can, but at least I'm pretty sure what's in most of it.

Generally, it's basic fare for me, some kind of simply prepared protein, a nice mound of steamed fresh veggies, and a simple salad with dressing I've mixed myself, no ingredient with more than three syllables!

Oatmeal & an orange for breakfast, homemade soup & fruit for lunch, over and out, always tasty and never boring.

I also appreciate Lyndagayle's response. We stuff our kids and ourselves with sugar, fat and chemicals and then wonder why heart disease, diabetes and cancer increase in this "enlightened" age. Back to basics!

A big thumbs up for Nancy. I too think people should buy less processed foods and get back to just real cooking. Every time I go to the grocery store I think only if the produce section had better selections we would all be better off. When I was a kid people didn't eat as much processed foods as they do today and they were on the most part healthier. When I was 14 a girl in my gym class found out she had diabetes. Every one was shocked. This was a large Junior High in Dallas and no one had ever heard of anyone our age with diabetes. She had Type 1 and we had never heard of Type 2. Today Type 2 is so common. It due to the fact that people don't eat right and get enough exercise.

Amen. I totally agree. I can't remember the last time I made anything from a boxed mix including cakes. brownies, pudding, noodles, rice flavored stuff. I can't believe I ever did use that junk at one time.

It's wonderful to try to cook completely from scratch but that's not always realistic. It depends on how large your kitchen is, how much storage space the kitchen shelves, refrigerator and freezer have and whether you can even do your own canning. It also depends on how many hours a week you work and travel to and from work, how many children you have and whether or not you have a disability that limits you.

I try to cook from scratch as much as possible but there are some items I don't have the energy to make from scratch. The trick is using common sense in any recipe and adjusting the recipe ingredients accordingly. For just one ingredient example is some of the best tasting recipes call for a canned item or two that, yes, have a lot of sodium but you can temper that by not adding additional salt, including garlic salt or onion salt, called for in the recipe. Just one half teaspoon of salt listed to use in a 'from scratch' recipe has 1,400 mg of sodium which is 540 mg 'more' sodium than is in a can of Cream of Celery soup and 1,010 mg 'more' sodium than in a can of white kidney beans.

Cooking from scratch is honorable and absolutely the best but not all canned or packaged foods are bad for you and common sense should prevail. ;-)

Oh and I also agree with staying away from those cans of nasty creamed soup and the chemical cocktail they call Cool-Whip. Good grief, do people who use these items ever read the ingredient list?

Thumbs up from me, too! :-) I make my own mixes up and store them in jars. I can my own veggies/fruits/meat. I can control what goes into them. Emulsifiers, flavor enhancers, dyes, they all turn me off. Food tastes like real food without it.
