Testing Egg Freshness

If you want to know if an egg is still fresh, put it in a bowl of salt water. If the egg floats or sits with the big end up, the egg is no good.

This may be true, but please be aware that if the water is too salty, ANY egg will float, whether good or bad. This was an old way of testing the strength of brining solutions used for curing hams or pickling certain foods... "make the water salty enough to float an egg." I've tried it with students at a homeschool group as we were learning about food preservation, and it works.

It does take a great deal of salt, probably much more than anyone would consider using for a test to see if eggs are good. Even so, I still wanted to give the warning that water which is TOO salty will float even a fresh egg. I will still give this tip a thumbs up vote!
