Memory Tips and Tricks

Volume Six, Number 47 December 4, 2004
http://www.ThriftyFun.com

Hello,

We had planned on sending out the ThriftyFun News earlier today, but... we forgot! Just kidding of course. Our issue today is about Memory Tips and Tricks. I tend to remember things that I write down, it seems to etch it in my memory. For some people remembering things isn't much of a problem, one of my daughters seems to remember everything I ever said to her. :) Thank you to everyone that sent in tips.

Reminding the Hubby... Put Something on the Dash

My hubby keeps an empty soda bottle top in his truck, when I ask him to bring something home or he has an errand that day, he goes and sticks the cap up on the dash. Then when he's driving around and he sees the cap he'll say "why is that there?"..."oh yeah I have to get such and such..." Works for him :)

If I am taking food to work or home from a party I put my car keys in the fridge with it. I never get far without it!

Using Rubberbands To Help Remember

My wife used rubberbands to jog her memory. Somedays she will come home from work with 4 rubberbands on her wrist. Each rubberband represents something she wanted to do when she got home.

Changing What's Familiar

In order to remember a one-time thing, I take my wedding ring or watch off and put it on the opposite hand. It is so irritating to have it on the wrong hand that I keep reminding myself why it is there and the task I need to do. As soon as I do the task, I can move it back to the correct hand.

Keep a Calendar in the Kitchen

I have a calendar in my kitchen and absolutely everything I need to remember has to be written on there! I check it every day just to make sure that I don't miss anything. Calendars can be very expensive, but you can find them in your Dollar Store or Wal-Mart very inexpensively. Many pharmacies, banks, businesses, etc give them away free too!

Keep Lists Handy

I keep a list on the kitchen counter of things to do and things to buy. If I remember something else that needs to be done I just add it to the bottom of the list. After a day or two I rewrite the list and take off anything that's already marked off.

Remembering the New Year on Checks

Take a moment on New Year's Eve, or New Years Day to date every check in your checkbook with the new year. By the time those checks are gone you'll be remembering the proper year automatically.

Visual Cooking Reminders

When I was canning pickles this summer I would take a cut off cucumber end and put it up on my stove top to let me know each time I had put 1 cup of cucumbers in the pot. This helped me to keep track without worrying if I got sidetracked with the phone or whatever, 11 ends meant 11 cups...

Remembering Usernames and Passwords

To keep track of all my internet usernames and passwords for banking, bills etc. I just typed them all in catagories of: site, username, password then printed them out and taped them inside my computer cabinet door. No more forgetting. No one ever uses my computer so if privacy would be an issue, just hide it nearby your computer.

Remembering Without a List

If I'm running into a store for just a few things I will think of the words for each item I need, then with the starting letter from each word make a new word. For example if I need rice, bread, icecream, and donuts. I will use the word "bird". Then I'll repeat I need bird, bird, bird, B is for bread, I is for icecream R is for rice etc. Strange, but it works, especially if there isn't a note pad or pen around.

Geosoc.org - Improving Your Memory

"1. Memory itself probably cannot be developed; however, improvement in remembering comes from correcting certain habits or thoughts so that we use our memory to its fullest potential. Remembering is like seeing; improvement in either function does not depend upon how much we use it but, rather, how we use it." Read More . . .

"Whatshisface... Ya know, that guy... I can see her in my head, but can't remember her name... Do you find yourself saying that too often? Is it hard for you to remember names and faces, and when you meet people for the second time you don't remember meeting them the first?"
