Poem For a Pet Owner That Has Lost Their Pet - Put Me To Rest?

I just learned that my best friend's son lost his beloved dog. He had a heart attack, and the vet said he would live in pain, and strongly suggested he euthanize him. It took the poor guy 3 hours at the vet's office to break down and allow the vet to go ahead. My heart breaks for him.

There was a poem that I remember titled "Put Me To Rest" that was comforting to those who had to make the heart-wrenching decision to euthanize their beloved animal.

I cannot find it. If anyone knows the poem, will you please post it?

Thanks,
Kentucky-lass

PUT ME TO REST

Time to let me go my friend,
Because my life no-one can mend,
Its better to let me go this way,
Than watch me suffer night and day.

I'm happy to go, my time has come,
My quality of life is no longer fun,
Ive been so ill, so its not a bad thing,
To let me go forever resting.

Stay with me till I drift away,
Fast asleep forever I pray,
To relieve me from suffering and pain,
What more can I ask from my best friend.

Don't be sad, I'll be free from pain,
Never to be ill ever again,
I know you'll miss me being there,
But all the memories you have to share.

Thankyou for being my best friend,
And all my needs that you did tend,
Try not to be sad, try not to cry,
Now's the time to say GOODBYE.

Dear Kentucky-lass, love that poem; here's a story that might also help with the heartbreak of losing a pet:

THE RAINBOW BRIDGE

There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm Spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other.

There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth. So, each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group!

You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.

Remember Me
"Remember me always, but do not grieve for me too long. I have tried always to comfort you in times of sorrow, and have made every effort to add joy to your life. I never wanted to cause you pain.

Peace for me is certain now, and I suspect I will have eternal sleep in the earth I have loved so well.
Please, after your period of grieving for me, make room in your heart for another. You are the kind of human being that should always have a friend like me to love. Your kind and gentle heart should not be wasted on my memory for too long. Give your love to another. I know your new friend will never take my place, because we had something very special.
It may not be quite the same, but a new devoted and loving companion will in time, become special in their own way.
You loved me very much and I loved you. My spirit will always be with you, and no matter how deep my sleep, my grateful heart will always remember you."

Oh, my Gosh, I think I am going to cry. I've printed this out and plan to get out my caligraphy pens for a personal make over on parchment ... I have a very dear friend whose 18 year old cat may need to be sent on to Kitty Heaven soon and this will help her.

Thank you Kentuck-Lass for requesting this poem and to those who found it ...

Dear Marlane, Mellissa, and EVERYONE Here:

You are so kind, and I can't tell you how much I apprecaite the helpfulness that each of you have shown.
I am sending a sympathy card today to the man who lost his pet, and the poem will be included.
I have been told that he can't stop crying, and I fully understand that. My poor dog is 14 1/2 years old and arthritic, and I can see his health declining, althought he still "demands" his daily walks, and is a happy dog. I am giving him the Hartz advanced vitamins now, so will see how that helps.

The vet said he has lived this long becasuse we have given him lots of love and good nutrition. I think I may have mentioned that before, so please excuse me if I have. I have a confession here....I have given him a lot of table scraps, with no bones of course. I have cooked for him often too. I bought chicken on sale, and that is his favorite. I will post a picture later.
I wish all of you a very happy day, and my heartfelt thanks to everyone!!

I just picked up the ashes of my four legged best friend yesterday and it destroyed me all over again. I had him for 13 years and he was my heart. I don't feel like I will ever be o.k. again but it's nice to read that I am not alone. That there are others out there who have had or are having these same feelings. My heart goes out to you all.

I write this quick note with the heaviest of hearts, as we had to let our beloved Freddy go yesterday. He was so young, only 3 1/2 years old.

My wife and I, along with our three teenage kids were faced with making what seems like, the worst decision in our lives... I am so proud of my kids, and their selflessness in making the right choice for Freddy, not for themselves.

I know that we will get past this, we are a tight nit family, but boy it sure hurts like heck!

Thank you all, your words have been healing,

ML

Thank you for the poem, Put Me To Rest. Our friends had to put their 14 year Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Cedar, down during the holidays. He was such a sweet boy and the Daddy to my Chesapeake, Bindi, He lived at a motel with his mommy and Daddy and people would send HIM postcards from everywhere! He lived at the beach in Westport, Washington.

He loved the waves, loved a truck ride, barking all the way. I used to lay in the sun and take naps with him, and last year, I would lay him on a heating pad in the winter, and in front of fan in the summer, forever sneaking him treats. I have so many tears for him tonight, he was one of those pets that ALWAYS looked at you with eyes of love and NEVER held a grudge. I have a plaque that says "All the dogs you have ever loved will be waiting for you in heaven"

I know he will be there for his Daddy who is taking this very hard. My heart has a hole in it for Cedar Boy as we called him, but know his Daddy is in pain. Cedar went on Crab Fishing Boats, Logged in the back woods, climbed a ladder to be where his pack was so he could just be with everyone. Cedar Boy loved life and everyone, any adventure, and everyone loved him, he was huge, but a gentle giant. Thanks for listening. Cedar was never my dog, but all at the beach, including visitors shared him! and we will all miss the woof-woof that we so so loved to hear!

Aww that is such a lovely poem.
I have a big love for animals and my grandfather had a situation like that once. I no a lot of people here who have posted must have a love for animals too. I suggest that they but the book Marley. It made me cry. It reminded me of what happend to you. A Labrador Retriever with his owner from being such a young pup is going through pain and they have to make the decision of putting him down.
