My Dog Bites?

If my dog has bitten someone, should I get rid of it?

I am an advocate for animals so my first response is to try to get your dog into obediance classes. There are all kinds of classes and books on how to stop a dog from biting. I am not sure about where you are from, but here if you turn a dog into the humane shelter and they know the dog has bitten or if they even believe the dog may bite, it is put to sleep. (My town is not an extremely large one, has 250,00 people in it and last year our local "humane" shelter put to sleep 11,000 dogs. That means on average they put to sleep a little over 30 dogs per day, everyday, for 365 straight days!.)

What were the circumstances around the incident? Was it just for no reason? Can you avoid the situation happening again? Has the dog otherwise been a good, friendly animal, not showing any other abnormally hostile behavior?
I am sure you will make the best decision for you and your family, but think really hard before you get rid of him/her. I know dogs and people are not of the same species, but both have feelings and souls. We would never get rid of a child if she/he bit someone. We would reteach them in order to correct the behavior. At the very least talk to your vet, he/she should have a wealth of info on this topic and would be a better judge of character as your dog's temperment. Good Luck!!

I agree with the above article. Get your dog in a class, don't farm him out to the pound or to someone else's property (turn him loose) sometimes a dog will bite when teased, kicked or abused. you can't blame him, he's defending himself. Most dogs are good and VERY smart if you give them the time and the proper training :)

where i come from, if there is a lawsuit or claim for damages from a dog bite you are required by law to destroy the animal.
there are two schools of thought on this. some think if a dog bites once it will do it again. others think it can be trained out of an animal.

if i had children or they were close by where the animal is exposed to them i think i would put the dog down. i couldn't take the chance of a child being hurt or disfigured.
was the dog teased into biting? was it an adult? is it an old dog that might be in pain and grouchy? there are so many variables it is hard to advise.

I totally agree. If your kids or family member did something wrong you wouldn't get rid of them. You & your dog need training because you really don't know anything about having a dog & how is the poor dog going to know what to do if the human doesn't.

There is so much not known here. Is the dog a large one, a small one? Was the person bitten a child, an adult? Has the dog shown aggressive behavior before this time? What were the circumstances? Did the bite break the skin?

I agree that if you get rid of the dog, it will probably be destroyed and that would be a shame.

Let us know more and we may be of more help.

Unless this dog always demonstrates aggressive behavior or growls at people, kids, etc it really all depends. What were the circumstances of the bite? If the dog was teased or hurt by the victim, it was almost a justifiable behavior. Keep your dog away from kids. If the dog frequently shows bad behavior, snaps, gowls, etc, he is not a good pet and I would seriously consider having him put down.

I have two rescued LH dachshunds and both have nipped people or other dogs. I have posted signs at my back gate, am very careful not to allow people to pet them when I walk them. I am also careful when new folks come into the house, warn them and try to keep the commotion to a minimum.

Some caution on your part will save the life of your pet, save you from lawsuits.

if i had a dog that would bite people i would get rid of him immediately for he is a liability...a lawsuit waiting to happen not to mention pain and suffering of the bitten individual. was the dog provoked? if not the dog would find a new zip code pronto

Since you guys are on the subject, does anyone have any advice for me on it? My dog has bitten me twice now, both times, I woke her up. She was asleep and one time I was just going to love on her and she snapped and bit me, the other time, she was laying behind where I was sitting and I reached back without looking to nudge her out of the way and she snapped again and bit. Both times they were very fierce bites leaving punctures and major bruises.

I don't have kids, but will in a few years. I have a smaller dog than her and also a bigger dog. All shelter rescues. I know she probably had something traumatic happen to her to cause this, but I don't know how to stop it. I don't want to put her down. She's a great dog when she's awake. Any suggestions?

I have 3 dogs and i have the fence, the gate, and all surrounding property lines posted that my dogs are watch dogs and will bite. Well this morning, a friend of my son-in-laws, that has been over here a hundred times, and knows fully well that my dogs bite and for some reason dislike black people, came to our house and decided that he would walk right into the yard, through the posted gate and into my dogs property that they are suppose to protect, and needless to say, one of my dogs bite him on the hand, just at the knuckle. It was just a tooth scrape but I know it was still painful, but it didn't bleed for a minute. He left our yard threatening to have my dogs killed and he was going to sue us for everything we had, which isn't that much anyhow, but I told him that I would pay any medical or even take him to the doctor myself right then, but he declined. I asked him why he came into the yard when he knew that my dogs would bite and that they did not like black people, but got no reply. Only rude and evil gestures about my dogs. Am I covering my butt by having all areas of the perimeter of property posted that the dogs will bite? I know that he can't get blood out of a rock but will they make me put my dog to sleep, when he was clearly in the wrong?

Thank you I was interested to read this page as I am researching some information re golden retriever with a history of biting both its owners and others. Its most recent attack being my friends wife who has bites all up her arm and bruises on her shoulder.

I will take away the information here and talk to them.

One point however I do not think that one can easily compare the bite of a child and a dog when we consider the consequences and differences between the bite of a small child and a large dog with a mouth of large teeth.
