Making Eggs in a Cup?

How do you make eggs in a cup? When I was a little girl, my grandmother made me eggs in a coffee cup or mug. I'm not sure if they were poached or soft boiled, but she would put them in there sometimes with pieces of bread and some salt and pepper.

You could even eat them over toast. Does anyone remember anything like this or how to make them? They were very good but it has been a long time and I don't remember. Thanks!

My husband makes these often for us, he boils the eggs halfway between soft and hard (if that makes sense) then breaks and removes the shell, puts the eggs into glasses/mugs, adds a little butter and pepper to taste and mashes it up a little with a spoon....yum.
We don't use salt much but you could add salt to taste also.

I remember when I was little I had a friend whose Grandmother made this for her and I'd never tasted eggs done like this until my husband made them this way.

My mom made these when I was little. It is now one of my "comfort foods". Just soft boil the eggs, crack gently, remove egg from shell (I scrape it out with a butter knife).

Place in a cup, add approx 1 Tbsp of butter for each egg and 1/2 slice of bread, torn into small pieces, for each egg. Mix well and salt to taste. YUMMY.

Some of the methods outlined, sound like poached eggs. I have had baked eggs, too. Use an oven safe cup or small bowl. Butter it, then crack in an egg. Drip about a tsp. of warm water on top of the egg. Place in 350 degree F oven for about 10 minutes or until firmness you like.
OR you can remover the crusts from slices of bread and butter both sides. Put each slice in a cup of a muffin tin, pressing into the cup to form a cup for the egg. Break an egg in each bread cup and place in preheated oven until bread is toasted and egg done to your taste.

I make a microwave version of this. Use a coffee cup or other small bowl. The time will vary with different microwaves, but for 2 eggs in a bowl with a bit of butter, salt and pepper, one minute is about right.

Cover the vessel with plastic wrap first; it holds in steam and heat.

I am so glad you asked this question. My grandmother also made them for me when I was young and I loved them. We always called them soft boiled eggs. I have no idea how to make them but I'll keep checking this page to see if anyone leaves you an answer. Good luck!

Wow! Thank you so much! I thought I was the only one who ate these. I happen to talk to a friends Mom late yesterday and she said she use to make them. She would boil water and then crack a egg or two or as many as you want. Wait like 3 minutes and scoop them out with a slotted spoon.

But she mentioned something about putting a teaspoon of vinegar in the boiling water. Remove the eggs, put in a coffee cup. You can add bread, butter some salt and pepper. I can hardly wait to try these again! Thanks, Kathy

One thing is using the microwave you have to be careful as the egg will explode. Bring your water to boil in a micro safe container, if you are not doing this on the stove. Sometimes just the boiling water will be enough and let steam in the water the necessary time. You have that fine line to cross from raw to cooked egg in order to get around the samonella issue.

This is similar to eggs poached in milk, my family liked these on toast.

Oh my gosh. I feel like a kid again! Eggs in a cup was on of my favorite treats as a kid. My parents would make it for me whenever I was sick in bed. I loved it! All the recipes above seem right. I never knew anyone else who'd heard of eggs in a cup. My husband thought I was crazy. Thanks for the memory flashback, and enjoy your treat! :)

Wow. What did I start? Lol.This is great. Never knew so many people liked these and now there are many takes on how to make them. Thank you all for your input! Maybe we'll hear some more ways. I made them the other day and it truly was a comfort food and so yummy. Enjoy all! Thanks again, Kathy

My grandmother made these, too. She would get the water to a rolling boil, then set the eggs in with a table spoon so they don't crack, then boil for 2 minutes. tear the toast into little pieces, add a scoosh of butter and crack the egg over the top. I always had trouble with the shells cracking in the boiling water (cold egg, hot water), so I started doing the same thing, only fry the eggs over-easy instead of boiling.

We call them "TV Eggs" because you can eat them in front of the tv without a mess!

That's what we called it too. I still love them, but don't have the big white cups so I usually do them in a bowl now.

I soft boil the egg for about 4 1/2 minutes. Any less and the white isn't cooked. I boil the water then gently put the egg in with a spoon.

After 2 minutes start the toast. Butter toast, tear it up, then take egg out of water, rinse in cold for a second, just enough to handle, break with a knife, and scoop out egg.

The one way my Mom spoiled us was in getting all of the food done at the same time, and at the right temperature. I still do it, especially with eggs.

My old roommate use to make them. But we did them differently. We would boil them then scoop them out. Use salt, pepper, mayo and bacon bits. Yummy.
