Cleaning Zinc Canning Jar Lids?

Does anyone know how to clean the metal (zinc) jar lids or covers without harming them. These are the ones that were used years ago for canning. They have a glass liner in the top of the inside cover. Thanks

Hi Paula,

They are just galvanized iron sheetmetal. Get some Naval Jelly from a hardware store or Phosphoric Acid from a drug store, and scrub rusty or discolored areas with it. The phosphoric acid will turn rust into iron phosphate, which is stable. If you use wadded up aluminum foil and phosphoric acid to scrub, you will wind up with a good looking light colored effect, that blends in nicely.

The same trick works fine with all galvanized metal, that has become discolored or rusty.

Have FUN!

The lids are not galvanized, they are zinc. Using an acid on zinc lids will eat the zinc and destroy the lids.

You cannot can with these lids unless you have the rubber ring that fits between the jar and the lid. Your food will spoil.

How dirty are these? If they are just dusty, run them through the dish washer, like anything else. They will never be shiny, if that is what you are going for. They are a soft grey color normally.

Soak in warm water with baking soda for a few minutes then using a toothbrush clean the rim well, rinse. Sterilize before air drying and store in an airtight container.

An alternative is to boil in vinegar water mixture then air dry and put into airtight container.
