I need help for my 13 year old grandson. He is at the age where he is starting to get the dreaded pimples. I would like suggestion on what to use for cleansing his skin.

My friend Nikki had very bad acne and NOTHING she tried worked, and she thought she had tried everything but someone at a health food store suggested that she try making a paste out of borax (yeah, the stuff you can use to wash your clothes...) and water and washing her face LIGHTLY with it using circular motions. It tends to dry up the zits, but you don't want it to dry your whole face out so she follows it with a few drops of jojoba oil. It's the most like your skin's natural oils so it soaks in very nicely and doesn't feel greasy. I know it sounds wrong to add oil back to your face when you're trying to get rid of pimples but I saw this treatment work for her when nothing else did! Plus it's all natural so he wouldn't be putting toxic chemicals on his skin, and borax is REALLY inexpensive. The jojoba oil would be the most expensive part and it would probably only be 10 bucks or so for a bottle and it would last him a long time. You should really give this a try because it works and it's cheap!

I have a 13 year old daughter with similar problem. We have found the Acne Free system (sold at most stores such as WalMart, Walgreens, Fred's etc) works great. You can also use ProActiv solution, but it is more costly and I beleive still has to be mail ordered. I would go with the acne free. If he experiences a little dryness, just use it where he has the outbreaks, even though the box tells you not to do this, you can and it works!

I highly recommend Proactiv Renewing Cleanser. I bought mine from QVC several years ago, but you can probably get it another way. In fact, I haven't had to use it in a very long time.

Plain witch hazel is good, inexpensive, and doesn't smell "girlie". Put some on a cotton ball and wipe the face, avoiding eyes.

I have very sensitive skin and so does my 15 year old son. We also are both prone to breakouts. I started using Cetphil (daily gentle clesnser fpr normal to oily skin) about 3 years ago and my son started using it not long after. This keeps the breakouts under control, and does not cause dry skin or allergic reactions.

A teen friend just mentioned last week how great HONEY is a clearing up pimples. She said dab natural honey (she didn't use organic or anything special, just honey)on the pimple, cover it w/ a band-aid and it'll clear it right up. Since she started using this method her skin rarely breaks out.

If fact I decided to do a quick Google before posting this advice and this hint has already been posted on ThriftyFun at this address www.thriftyfun.com/tf47981535.tip.html so it must work for others too=-)

If it gets bad, be sure to take him to the doctor or dermatologist for help. My daughter had acne that didn't seem bad and she eventually got on tetracycline and other medications, but was still left with scars. She has had expensive laser treatment in her 30's. It is best to take no chances if they have sensitive skin. Sometimes I see adults with terrible acne and I want to tell them to go to the dermatologist because I know how much help it can be. $100 spent now is better than $7,000 later.

This sounds crazy but a doctor told me this when I was 16 years old. He said wash you face every night with LAVA hand soap. It worked for me.
Good luck I know what it feels like.

He needs to wash his face with a face soap #1. Then the next step would be a tone,r which can be either which hazel or alcohol. Next he needs a moisturizer. My son uses pro care from Avon and it's inexpensive. He could you vita moist which you can buy in the drug store or Walmart. The key is consistency.

One thing that I feel is important to mention here, is that people get acne from different causes. At 13, his is caused by hormonal changes that are taking place in his body. Properly cleaning his face is important, but may not stop it from breaking out. Along with whatever he chooses to do, stress the importance of a good diet, drinking plenty of water, etc. I wish him well.

Im 15 and I get break outs. I started to wash my face w/ either achohal or peroxide everyday. I also started using "PanOxly" a kind of acne cream that is very inexspensive and can befound at drugstores like "CVS, Walgreens, Exereds, ect.ect." or at your at supermarkets like "Walmart". I also use a face moisterizer and face wash every other day. It works and have had very little break outs scense I started. I also get comments on howclear my face is. I bet you could find a simpler way but this way works for me. Oh, and i have heard a lot about that honey treatment...havent tried it but I have heard it works.

I still had acne when I was in the Navy @ age 28. I had an allergic reaction to something I'd made contact with and had to have the patches attached to my back for testing. The Dermatologist who applied the patches asked me if I used hot water to shower in and I said "Yes, as hot as I can stand it." He told me to cool it down as cool as I could stand it and when I tried it, the acne went away like someone had flipped a switch!

Witch Hazel is awesome. Inexpensive and cleans very well without drying the skin out. Just use a small amount on a cotton ball or other cleaning pad and do the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin. This is a great nightly ritual for keeping your skin clean, then again in the morning after your bath or shower. You will see the dirt come off on the cotton ball. This works very well.

Zinc. When my son was going through the 'terrible teens', I gave him some zinc supplements and it did help to clear his face/chin up. Zinc will deplete your body's copper, so consult your doctor; if he/she says: "eat 3 well balanced meals, take 2 aspirins and call me in 3 weeks." do some web searching.

I never had acne as a teenager, but at 28, had 10 zits on my face at one time. A friend told me about the Galvanic Spa system from Nu Skin Enterprises. I rubbed this hand held device on my face for 10 minutes with the special gels, and the next morning my acne was dried up and the redness was gone! I was so amazed that I am now selling the units. The same little miracle machine also decreases lines & wrinkles and reduces cellulite! It's like a professional spa facial in the comfort of your home! Amazing technology!

Honey works a charm, but even better is green tea. Place a green tea bag over the spot for at least half an hour--the green tea draws the toxins out of the spot.

Tea tree is wonderful and a natural antiseptic. You can find it in Paul Mitchell for 5-6$ and he can wash his hair w/ it too. ivory soap is also great for everyday use in the morning. Try to keep hair and hands off the face as much as possible;) Good luck.

As TBLAURA said, Lava soap really works. I have a friend who recommended it to me. You buy a new bar of the old green Lava, like the one your granddaddy used to clean his hands. Lava now has some new products, so be sure not to buy any of the ones with added oils or softeners (or whatever they are putting in it now.) Just buy the original Lava. I think it still comes in a red wrapper.

Tell him to use it only to wash his face. He can hold it with a wash cloth, or with his hand and wash his whole face with it, but unless he has acne elsewhere tell him not to use it anywhere else. Also, tell him not to lather up his hand and then put it on his face. Simply hold it with his hand. If he lathers up his hands, and then applies it to his face, he will also be cleaning his hands. Your face has more oil than your hands, so it will not get as dry as your hands will get.

My friend raised 3 teenagers using this to treat their acne. I recommended this to a friend several years ago because he was having major acne issues. His grandmother told him that it would work. If you will check some of the fancy soaps that treat acne, you will find that they have the same ingredients as Lava.

Unbelievable, isn't it!

My husband always dealt with his teenage acne by washing his face with shampoo. He would take his soapy hands and scrub his face as well as his hair. He said it was very effective. He has taught my sons to do the same and they seem to have less breakouts on average than their friends. It's easy to try as you don't have to buy anything special. Good luck!

Baby shampoo works very well as a face wash, gentle & removes the oil buildup. Used everyday your son should soon see a great improvement.

Here are things that for many people are just as helpful as the type of soap: clean pillowcase every day, 2 clean washcloths every day (one to wash with and one to dry with), hot soap and water - and rinse until the skin squeaks, clean hair, keeping fingers off the face, and avoiding sugar and fat. As for type of soap, I recommend oatmeal.
