Driving The Speed Limit To Save Money

Gas prices are rising rapidly (as always), so here's a tip for getting better gas mileage: Obey speed limits! Studies show that, for every 5 miles per hour you drive over 60 mph, it's like paying an extra 20 cents per gallon of gas! And, by actually going the speed limit, you'll be avoiding a pricey speeding ticket.

So, when those folks are speeding around you on your morning commute, just remember: YOU are making your gas last longer, avoiding tickets, and just being a safer driver! Aren't you smart? :)

You are right. I am sticking to the speed limit more now, and when they rush past me, I smile and say 'go ahead and sweep the road for me, so there won't be any tickets left when I go through!' And when I get a tailgater, I just make like a bucking bronco and throw him off, by pulling over and shoulder-driving or slowing down until he gets the idea. Wanna see some entertainment? just drive the speed limit! I feel so peaceful when I don't drive like a caffienated maniac.

I now drive 5 mph slower (posted at 70mph). I smile to myself when the person who zipped by me ends up at the same offramp light.

I changed my driving speed and saved 47 cents per gallon!

Last time I filled up my tank, I decided to drive 50-55 MPH on the highway, just to see if I would really improve my gas mileage in my 2000 Honda Accord (an automatic). I drive around town, and about 7 miles on the highway every day. I'm not an aggressive driver, and I normally drive around 70 on the highway.

Just by lowering my top speed, I increased my gas mileage by 3 MPG! That was with the A/C running, which I just started doing this month.

I also started "driving like I had no brakes," meaning that I try to avoid using the brakes as much as usual by taking my foot off the gas earlier when I know there is a stop ahead.

Try driving the speed limit for one tank of gas, and check your results. I recommend using your cruise control to maintain speed.

For additional savings, be sure your tires are inflated at or a little above the PSI listed on the tire, and change your air filter regularly. You will be amazed at the results.
