Buying a Gift for a New Grandma?

Bronze Feedback Medal for All Time! 190 Feedbacks

A very dear friend of mine is going to be a first time grandma. Instead of buying a gift for the baby or the new mom, I'd like to get a nice gift for grandma. Any ideas would be appreciated.

There will be lots of pictures taken of the first grandchild. How about a new camera/photo album/film/memory card etc.?

Making a very special baby gift:

---> Here's some ideas you can make for grandma to show off her new grand-baby:

Broach: Have the mom or a family member e-mail you a digital close-up picture of the new baby then shrink it down to about 4 inches high then print it out on shrinky-dink printing plastic (the plastic that shrinks when you heat it in the oven). After printing cut all the pictures out (& punch any holes, see below). Now go ahead & shrink the plastic (according to directions on the package) & the baby's picture will shrink down to the correct size. Now simply add a pin back. The correct glue to use for the pin back is E-6000.

* To make it extra fancy: Before you shrink it punch or drill 1/8 inch holes in the plastic (these will shrink to pin sized holes). You'll need 3 to 5 holes to hang beads from the bottom (like you are making earrings).

A note: It works best if you fill up the whole 8 x 11 1/2" shrink plastic sheet with different sizes & different pictures of the baby. That way one will surely work! You want the pin to be of a wearable size (about 1 x 2 inches when complete) so read the directions on the package so you'll know where to start.

Photo Charm Bracelet or Necklace: You can make a charm bracelet in the same way. Just print out a bunch of pictures then shrink them after cutting them out & punching holes in the top. Add to the bracelet (or necklace) with jump rings.

Mug: My second idea is to make a set of drinking glasses or a coffee mug with the babies picture on them:

* I think Costo or Walgreens will also do this FOR you. They also make photo mouse pads too!

Custom Photo: you can make one of the following with babies photo: soap, wood plaque, magnets (of baby's pic). You simply order the decal paper from the URL below, then follow the directions:
www.decalpaper.com/

Custom Pillow or Quilt: A pillow with the babies picture on it can also be made with printable cotton or silk sheets (available at ant craft or fabric store)... You can make your own printable cotton by buying a close weave cotton (the wash it without fabric softener of any kind) then ironing freezer paper to the back (for stiffness so the fabric will go through the printer). Then cut the fabric with the freezer paper on the back to 8 x 11 1/2" (to fit into your printer) then print. Now sew this fabric photo of baby into anything you like!

You can also buy the printable fabric squares here:

Plaque: If these things sound WAY to hard & you want something simple. How about a simple plaque or framed photo to hang with babies photo & the day he or she was born along with how much they weighed & how long the babies was when born (the stats) on the bottom of the photo.

How about some storybooks for Grandma to read to the little one.

How about a brag book that Grandma can put baby photos in? The come in all price ranges and hold about 36 photos. You can insert a paper on which you write, "from (your name) to (Grandma's name) on the first blank page." You could also add baby's name on the second page, using transfer letters from a craft store's scrapbook section.

A Scrapbook kit that she can design and write her feelings and experiences with this baby. A gift the child will love for years to come and Grandma will love creating with all the photos and "stories" that are going to happen.
