Carpet is Sticky from Urine?

My mother is elderly and is in reasonably good health except for a urine control problem. She takes pills and wears those diaper type things, but they don't always work. Her carpet is sticky and I know it's from urine leaks. Any suggestions for making the stickiness go away?

I'd go straight to professional cleaning. Make sure you tell them what the problem is so they can use the right pre-treatment.

Dear Friend,
Here's my detailed recipe for cleaning up all traces of cat pee & believe me if it'll work for stinky cat pee, it'll work for peoples too! The main thing to remember is SATURATE the carpeting with the Enzyme Pet Urine Remover, & if you can't find OUT! then any brand of ENZYME pet stain cleaner will do. Just make sure it says "enzyme cleaner" on the squirt bottle. You can buy it at any pet store or Walmart.

HERE IT IS:

Here's a GREAT "recipe" for cleaning & PERMANENTLY removing cat urine & other pet stains & odors:

To clean up pet urine:

# 1) Start by first cleaning the area with a Vinegar-Water solution: Use 2 -3 parts water mixed with 1 part Vinegar. (It's easiest to put this mixture in a well marked spray bottle) Clean & Blot, with a white towel or white rag.

*** A side note: NEVER use Ammonia to clean up Cat or Dog urine! Because Cats & Dogs will be attracted right back to that same spot to go again, since all urine is so strong in ammonia, this "fools the pets nose".

NEXT: and this is the most important step:

#2) Buy "OUT! " brand pet odor neutralizer at Walmart, it works by "eating" organic stains & odors by using "good bacteria and enzymes" it cost only $4.79 (You can use any brand of pet odor & stain remover as long as it says "Cleans with Enzymes" on the bottle)

* The main trick is to keep the "OUT!" wet so the good bacteria & enzymes stay "alive" by covering the area with plastic wrap or an unused plastic garbage bag. DO NOT blow dry area as this will kill the good bacteria that "eat" the stain & smell. "Out" smells like yummy vanilla, which is nice.

# 3) The second day: Repeat the application of the "OUT" product.

# 4) The third day: Pour plain old drugstore hydrogen PEROXIDE on the area & let it fizz & bubble up anything that's left. Do this & I can bet your pet urine smell will disappear!

* Be careful to pre-test the carpet in a discreet area before using the Hydrogen Peroxide, just to make sure the carpet won't fade. (I've use peroxide many, many times to clean spots on my carpet & upholstery & it's never hurt my carpet, upholstery or any clothes fabric.

* PEROXIDE works to remove ANY organic stain (that means it will remove grape juice which is natural, but not grape Jell-O or grape kool-aid which is artificial, anyway... you get the idea.) Peroxide will also remove Blood, Coffee, & Hot Chocolate!
Peroxide is a Totally Amazing stain remover! It works by using Oxygen to "fizz out" the stain. Simple, but effective!
* (Do NOT use the stronger peroxide that women bleach their hair with. Use the cheap 59 cents peroxide that is sold in grocery & drug store's "first-aid" isle.

----> Make sure to do the above steps in the exact order I suggested, because if you use the Peroxide before the OUT! then the peroxide may kill the good bacteria & enzymes. Also, If you don't have the time, you can skip the Vinegar step. But if you REALLY want to make sure you get out ALL of the odor & stain, then follow ALL the above steps because they are all important! Any one of the steps posted above will work, but all together, they work even better!

she's asking about stickiness, not odor and stains. None of the posts addressed the stickiness

Try the first two steps a couple of times, then treat with hydrogen peroxide (with the pre-test in a discreet location first) or Oxy Clean. If the do-it-yourself -- inexpensive -- treatment doesn't work after the second time, then bring in a professional.

But why go straight to the expensive solution first, right?

I had this problem with a lil dog (My son in law's dog).
1- Call a carpet cleaner.

2- Go to Pet's Mart or Petco and buy a galon of Oxy Solution (by Simple Solution), this is the cheapest of all. They work by destroying the enzyme that produces this smell. It can be sprayed directly on the carpet, (try it first though).

My mom (84 yrs. old), also uses diapers and the smell is awful. I do this and also use it on her skin, is completely harmless to human and pets. You can even spray her bed and bedding before washing it. Hope this works. Happy New Year

I second using peroxide. I've used it also for cat pee and even stains from when they throw up , it seems to eat away at it and gets rid of the smell. I use it full strength and douse it on carpet rub it in then blot and push it around with a cloth.

I'd be inclined to talk to the doctor about prescribing other kinds of garments or pads so that the problem can be cleared up first, before tackling the carpet. Bless you for caring for your ol' mama, she must have raised you right.

The wetness could be a problem for her skin and such, so the doctor is the place to call first.

Is your mother diabetic? If she isn't you better get her tested as sticky urine means alot of sugar in the urine. A sure sign of diabetes along with frequent urination. I would clean the carpets with hot water in a shampooer with some laundry detergent and vinegar. Works for other kinds of urine and hot water dissoves sugar which is why the carpet is sticky
