What can I use for an eraser for a dry erase board besides the traditional erasers? Has anyone used something else successfully?

I use a soft cotton rag. There might be something better, but I have been happy with that for now :)
We use plain white dish towels that my hubby brings from work. Also, every once in a while, we use a little windex on a paper towel.
The best thing for dry erase boards is hair spray. Get something cheap like Aqua Net or VO5 and spray it on and wipe with any rag or paper towel. It comes out totally clean and dry.

Old t-shirts and old socks work great. Our classroom uses dry erase boards for working problems and each student brings an old sock at the start of the semester just for this purpose.
I know you asked about erasers, but I thought I'd add an extra hint too:
Instead of buying expensive spray cleaner, most dry erase boards will look as good as new if you rub them with a rag dampened with isopropyl alcohol.
As a teacher, I've tried several things. What I find best for erasing are these things: baby wipes, Clorox wipes, old socks, old rags, and my latest find-Germ-X on paper towels. Hope this helps.
I bought several cheap sponges with the green pad on one side and a bottle of cheap alcohol. Dampen, swipe and wipe.
Windex works great!
Those Mr. Clean eraser sponges work well too.
Those clorox bleach wipes work great. Just a bleach solution in a spray bottle with a good cotton rag would be good too.
I gather some free carpet sample squares from home improvement stores and cut them in half. They work great, don't cost anything, and take up almost no space.
Get a small box, like a jewellery box, cardboard ones, not flip open ones. Glue a strong magnet to the inside and wrap in an old sock, kids socks fit better. Rubber band on if need be.
My friend who teaches Pre-K cuts the Magic Erasers into quarters and has her students use those on dry erase boards, tables, and laminated sheets.
I personally like to use toilet paper and when my whiteboard gets dirty I clean it with wet toilet paper and dry it.works perfectly!!!!
Back in my early days teaching, a friend's room was only half converted to white board. He was also not give an eraser for the board. I floated and therefore shared his room. One day, a white hand towel appeared. And, well, it worked way better than the Expo erasers that most people use. A different friend actually spent time washing the expo eraser because what causes them to be less effective over time is that they get filled with dry erase schtuff. But, the towel worked better. But your hands get dirty as the towel is filled with dry erase schtuff. Over time, my solution has evolved and now bring it to the classrooms that I teach in, now at the post-secondary level.
This is a dry erase board at a rec center and they can't seem to get it clean. We are there for Pickleball and with sometimes as many as 32 to 40 players. The dry erase board, as you can imagine is for court assignment, and it gets used a lot.
I got little round dark navy blue woven coasters in the kitchen gadget area at Dollar Tree, four to a pack for a buck. They are cute and flexible, they clean the boards totally, and because they are a dark color they don't look disgusting and dirty.
Thank you deb-p for clarifying which dollar store. There is dollar tree, dollar general and family dollar. People generally say "dollar store" ...which one is it? Lol...i am gonna try your solution for cleaning dry erase boards.
I had "shadows" from leaving the writing on too long. Since I use it for writing down "to-do's", they tend to stay on the board awhile. LOL; just being honest here. So after trying everything I could think of (alcohol, hand sanitizer (same thing), board cleaner), I decided to try goo gone.
