Refurbished Computers

If you are looking for a deal on a computer and are leery of buying one from an online auction, you may want to consider refurbished computers. Large computer manufacturers like Dell and Apple sell refurbished computers with warranties at a 15% to 40% discount over buying the computer new. The benefit of buying them from the manufacturer is they come with a much longer warranty than you will get from an online auction, where items are usually sold as-is with the only guarantee being the item will not arrive dead on arrival.

I used a refurbished monitor for 6-8 years (it still works but my kids bought me a new one.
I am also using a refurbished printer/scanner/copier (4-5 yrs) and a refurbished copier (1.5 years). I wouldn't hesitate to buy refurbished - it saves a lot!

Most computers last about 5 years. It usually is the hard drive that fails. Refurbishing means that some techie like me will go through the computer via a software program to test each area for faults. The will replace the item that is giving the problem, remove dust and reassemble and on with the next. So if the computer was say about 1 year old when it failed, you now have one that may last another 5 years.

Most electronics, computers included, usually fail within the first 90 days if their is a manufacturing problem. I did have one system where a chip literally exploded about 2 years into its life. But that is an exception.

If you trust the manufacturer, I would not hesitate in getting a refurbished system. But remember that you will have to replace or want to replace the system every 5 years. Otherwise you may loose all of your data, pictures, music etc.
