Buy Frugal Extras When You Shop

When you go to the grocery store, pick-up a couple of frugal extras for your pantry, or to give to your favorite charity. Stores are always having sales or specials on canned goods, and some stores like WalMart, have regular prices as low as $0.50 a can or less on certain goods. An extra dollar or two for the pantry or charity is not cost prohibitive, and can go a long way to helping out those in need. You won't miss that extra dollar or two, and a can of beans, looks like a steak, to the truly needy!

I have volunteered at our local food pantry for many years and the above suggestion is an excellent idea! Taking it a bit further, toiletries cannot be purchased with food stamps and they are a big part of the grocery budget. I have developed a program for our local elementary school and I always stress that things like toilet tissue, shampoo, hand, dish and laundry soap, toothpaste, etc. are good items to contribute because even though you can't eat them, you still need them. So grab a couple of bars of soap or shampoo when you see it on sale! It will be very much appreciated also.

Don't forget bargains at discount and fabric and craft stores. With the holidays coming up very quickly, I watch for discontinued yarn ($1), crochet hooks ($.50), needles ($.97) and other craft tools to donate to the local women's shelter, so they can make their own Christmas gifts.

Nope. a can of beans looks like a can of beans to everyone. And maybe it looks like dinner.
